About the Author
Sean Cain spent the formative years of his career working in difficult instructional settings. Recognized for the success of both his students and the systems he designed and implemented, he quickly moved up through the instructional leadership ranks. This culminated in his last public education position as State Director of Innovative School Redesign (Texas). Currently, Cain serves as the Chief Idea Officer for Lead Your School (LYS), a confederation of successful school leaders dedicated to improving student, campus, and district performance. A passionate speaker, Cain is a sought-after national presenter and trains educators in schools and districts across the county. The primary foci of Cain’s current research and fieldwork are making complex problems solvable and the translation of theory into systematic practice. Mike Laird is currently a public school administrator as well as an adjunct professor, who mentors aspiring school leaders. Good reminder of already used good practices

One of the things I liked was that the authors acknowledged that teachers are being overwhelmed and need to be seen asthenosphere true driving force in improving education for all students. If you look at each foundation separately, you'll see that they are all things we learned in college/certification classes. They just put them all together and reminded us of how these practices can help us if we see past all the pressure put on us. At the very least, this book is a good refresher for a teacher needing a pep up to carry on with a smile.

Quality Formula

I ordered this last week and when it came in the mail yesterday, I just had to read it! Finished it this morning, and although it's highlighted up, my plan is to reread it many times before school begins again in August. My other task, is to encourage my teachers to read it and hopefully begin implementing the Fundamental 5 in their classrooms.
Our campus is a Title 1 campus and our state scores have gone down in the last two years. We have to come up with a plan; how can we increase our achievement? What Cain and Laird put in this book is not rocket science. If you've been in education for any length of time, the things they talk about are things that you know. But, have you ever put them together for an extended period of time? That's what the fundamental 5 is. Combining lesson frames, working in the power zone, frequent, small-group, purposeful talk, recognition and reinforcement and critical writing to create a formula for quality instruction.
What I liked most about this book, as an administrator, is that it is a quick read, but it's jam packed with great information. There is no fluff included, like in some other books I've read. The authors have been in education in various capacities and have seen first hand what they are talking about. They give explicit examples and explain the formula and it's components in a way that even a first year teacher can understand. I'm truly amazed at how much information is packed into this short book! It is one I will be recommending to many!
I have been following Mr. Cain's blog for awhile as he has worked with many campuses and principals that I am familiar with. His work has been proven and comes highly recommended by others in the field.

An Easy Read!

I liked how easy it was to read this book. There was not a lot of extra mumbo jumbo to dig through before you got to the meat. The authors got straight to the point with every step. I do, however, feel that this book was geared more towards secondary teachers and might be a bit more difficult for the elementary teachers to use with their students. I actually really like the idea of implementing the Fundamental Five. The strategies definitely made sense to me and I liked how the authors backed everything up with some data and statistics. For me, that really added to the validity of the process. Also, I liked that you can use the lessons that you've used previously in your classroom. I don't feel like I would be expected to recreate every lesson I've taught....and that is a GREAT thing!
