Simply the Best and Most Basic

This will not be a formal review. I found myself with the link available to write one, however, and just could not refrain from making a short stab at it. This set of tapes contains wisdom not just for couples but for anyone, at any time. A comprehensive base of spiritual wisdom drawn from world religions and and the best of thought is condensed into this perspective. Moreover, the suggestions that follow from it are practical and workable. How I wish I had discovered this set of tapes sooner! How I wish it were in hard copy. If you are in need of help, go here. The opening message by Stephen (both he and his wife are conducting the workshop from which the tapes were made) put me off a bit at first, with its quality of incantation. I realize now that this was likely the leading of an opening meditation. Continue. You will not be disappointed!

This book of eight brief chapters on different aspects of the visual arts is designed to explore the nature of imagery and its relevance to many facets of our lives. Drawing on a wealth of examples from Western and non-Western art through the ages, it examines a wide range of themes, from the relationship between form and meaning, to the methodologies of art-historical analysis, to the controversies that have surrounded certain works of art both past and present.

The author's concise and clear analytical approach to understanding and appreciating works of art helps readers understand the various ways of interpreting images by artists as diverse as Leonardo da Vinci, Vincent van Gogh, and Jackson Pollock. THE VISUAL ARTS affect our lives whether or not we ever set foot in a museum. Billboards use images to advertise products; pictures and sculptures stimulate our senses and decorate our urban and rural spaces. These, along with the buildings we inhabit, are manifestations of the visual arts.

This is a book of eight brief essays on different aspects of the visual arts. It is designed to engage readers with the nature of imagery and its relevance to their lives. Illustrations are drawn from Western and nonwestern art to give readers a range of the artistic possibilities in widely diverse societies.

Chapter 1 considers the universal appeal of images, while Chapter 2 addresses some of the culturally determined reasons for creating works of art. In Chapter 3, the relationship between form and meaning is surveyed, and Chapter 4 situates the artist in two kinds of context—prevailing aesthetic convention and practical training. The recurring formal theme of the circle, the column as a structural theme, and two iconographic themes—mother and child, and the artist's confrontation with death—are the subjects of Chapter 5.

When we view works of art today, we may not be seeing them in their original setting. In Chapter 6, therefore, we consider art in and out of the context intended by the artist. Since works of art have been analyzed from several different viewpoints, Chapter 7 introduces the major theoretical ways of interpreting imagery, focusing primarily on van Gogh's painting A Pair of Wooden Clogs. The final chapter challenges readers to come to grips with some of the controversies in which the visual arts have been involved.

About the Author
The fantastic career of Marine warrant Officer Faustin H, Wirkus, 48, former Pittston PA, coal miner, who became king of a tropical isle, ended October 8, 1945 when he died in Brooklyn, NY, Naval Hospital. Wirkus ruled the island of La Gonave off Port au Prince from 1925 to 1929. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Plot: Sec: 10, Site: 10695. Born in Pittston, the son of a Polish-American mine worker, Wirkus was destined for the life of a coal miner, but he ran away at 18 and joined the marines. In 1925, when a gunnery sergeant, he was appointed Marine administrator of La Gonave to halt internal disputes among the 12,000 natives on the small island. La Gonave had had a king named Faustin. When Faustin Wirkus arrived the natives knelt before him and buxom Queen Ti Meminne pronounced him the reincarnation of the late ruler, Wirkus became king and wore a two-foot crown. He was admitted to voodoo rituals and acquired a deeper knowledge of black magic than any other white man of his time. Wirkus gained wide publicity when the late William Seabrook, novelist, visited La Gonave and wrote a book "The Magic Isle." As a result, officials of Haiti, which claimed jurisdiction over the Island of La Gonave, found out about this and forced Wirkus to abdicate in 1929. He was discharged from the Marine Corps later the same year. Later he wrote this book with Taney Dudley, "The White King of La Gonave," lectured and became a bond broker in New York. In 1937, he married an Atlanta woman, who with their 7-year old son survived him. Wirkus returned to the Marine Corps in 1939 as a recruiting specialist and in 1944 was appointed instructor in aviation gunnery at the Chapel Hill, NC, Marine station. Taney Dudley was born in August 1901 in New Orleans. Little is known about her except that she lived in Bronxville New York and on April 6, 1929 she took a boat from Port-au-Prince Haiti to New York arriving on April 11, 1929. She was apparently the ghost writer and editor of this book but this is never explained.

This is a fascinating true story of a U.S. Marine who through a bizarre chain of events becomes the , "White King" of La Gonave which is an island just off the coast of Haiti. He must have been an intelligent and good hearted soul and he tells a good story. I read a borrowed version of this years ago and am excited to see it back in print...

"The realism of living"
Marvin sees the architecture of Greene and Greene as art that is part of the environment where we live. At his studio he showed me one of his most evocative images, the shadowy porte cochere and crisply curving driveway of the Blacker House, and there was a surprising detail: the sprinklers were on, forming a mist over the lawn at the right rear of the photograph. This is what Marvin calls the "realism of living." Daily life--represented by the sprinklers--is lived in these houses, no matter how artful or remarkable they may be from a design standpoint. In this case the mist created an ethereal, almost otherworldly aura, like the idealized background in the portrait of the Mona Lisa. The effect was both realistic and romantic at the same time.

a great gift

I ordered this book from Amazon and gave it to my husband, a retired architect. He was so pleased to receive it and we have especially enjoyed the outstanding photos of the Greene Brothers' work.

Another Passage Through the Wonders of Greene and Greene Ideas

Marvin Rand is an accomplished photographer with a special affinity for capturing the essence of architectural details. His eye is keen, his technical skill in manipulating the camera is obvious, and his ability to go beyond the surface makes this portfolio a very fine exploration of the mysteries and profound accomplishments of the brothers Greene!

Having the luxury of visiting many of the homes photographed here offers the opportunity to evaluate more acutely. After a fine introduction by Daniel Gregory who, like Rand, prefers to concentrate on interesting details rather than over-chewed history, the remainder of the book is a collection of lavishly colored plates of the houses created by Greene and Greene, showing the importance of the California climate in the way the houses were laid out architecturally, the concept of the bungalow style, and the craftsmanship which lent its name to a movement. But the real treasures are Rand's scrupulously lighted and composed images of details of the Greene and Greene genius. These include doors, and windows, lamps and furniture, intricate and simple designs from the blossoms of Art Nouveau, and the endlessly fascinating influence of the Orient in finding the quiet and tranquility of the through-designed/composed dwellings.

This is more a book of photographs than the books written by the Greene and Greene scholars and as such serves as an adjunct to the literature rather than just another volume about California's favorite architects. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, December 05

Art's and Craft's Masters

This is a gorgeous book on a most worthy subject. Greene and Greene's architecture is so unique and beautiful and it has never been photographed so well, the pictures just jump off the page, they are so vivid and they make the subject really pop. I have not always been an admiror of Greene and Greene's work, I realize that it is not everyones taste, but when captured this way I just can't see how anyone could not admire it. The seeming symplicity of the architecture belies an incredible amount of craftmanship and talent that it took to create these homes. I enjoyed the pictures of the grandest of the homes Greene and Greene produced, but it was really the small bugalows that I most enjoyed viewing, the attention to detail is amazing. If you have any interest in architecture and most certainly if you are someone who likes this particular style of architecture then I highly recommend this book, there are several books on Greene and Greene but this is the best in my opinion, but don't take my word for it look at the other books and chose for yourself, several are quite good, but as I have stated this one, in my opinion is the best...for what it's worth.

About the Author
Bob was born and raised in Rockland County. After raising three daughters and a career in education he decided to change the tempo of life and began a new occupation as a full-time writer of automotive history. This was simply an extension of what he had been doing since his preadolescent years when he and his brother would collect sales brochures from any auto dealer who wouldn't show them the exit. Ever since he was in elementary school Bob was fascinated by the hopped-up Fords and Chevys (and even an occasional Plymouth) of the late '30's and  '40's that the older "cool" boys drove to school. Recollections of  those cars from long ago instantly came to mind when he first saw the PT Cruiser in 2000. Having previously written numerous articles and several books on Chrysler vehicles, his interest in the  PT as the subject of a forthcoming  volume was instantaneous.
