The Final Battle Begins...
By S. Stevenson
To all Cahills:

Warning! This review is for your eyes only. If you fear Vespers are tracking you, immediately shut off your laptop, mobile, or other wireless device. Once you've gone a safe distance be sure to delete your browsing history. The Vespers are everywhere, and they're now beginning to make their final moves. And I don't think I need to warn you just what is at stake if the Vesper family gets their hands on all 39 Clues and Gideon Cahill's mysterious ring. The world is in your hands, Cahill agent.

Rick Riordan, Peter Lerangis, Gordon Korman, and Jude Watson team up to bring the latest installment in THE 39 CLUES saga with book 11: VESPERS RISING. Meant to be a transition between the first 10 books and the upcoming series, CAHILLS VS. VESPERS, this volume offers four stories by the authors. There are no chapters exactly, but instead long "short stories" about four different Cahill family members. Newcomers to the series should really go back to book one, THE MAZE OF BONES, instead of trying to tackle the subtle references and mysteries that would not make much sense otherwise.

Riordan starts things off with the story of the night Gideon Cahill died. Riordan takes us back to 1507 and the Madrigal family base off the coast of Ireland, and we finally get our first glimpse of the evil Damien Vesper -- who wants the clues badly. Vesper can see just how powerful he will become if he assembles them all, and he wants it. The story works well, and Riordan is at his usual top form giving us adventure and mystery along with revealing a few interesting key points in the Cahill story.

The second part picks up with Madeleine Cahill, grown up and attempting to infiltrate the court of King Henry VIII. Lerangis writes this story, and does a fairly decent job showing us two of the Cahill siblings and their journeys. This story, set in 1526 is exciting enough, with jousting and dungeon escapes, and a few twists. It's interesting to read these sorts of backstory with ten books already in print and providing a lot of information on how the different branches of the Cahill family interact. Keeping everything together while still bringing in the threat of the Vespers must have been quite a bit of work, but Lerangis manages to keep things flowing nicely.

Gordon Korman, who wrote books two and eight, ONE FALSE NOTE and THE EMPEROR'S CODE, really surprised me here. Book two was one of the weakest of the series, but his short story about Grace Cahill and her adventures in 1942 during the World War was absolutely amazing. Grace is thirteen and wondering if her mysterious father James will ever come home from his trips abroad. And suddenly, before she even realizes it, Grace is thrust into an insane adventure tracking clues and coming up against powerful Vesper enemies. This part was so fun to read with great side characters and puzzles that it made me want an entire book just about Grace.

The final story brings us back to the present with Amy and Dan. I was excited to see Watson taking part in VESPERS RISING. Her two books from the series, BEYOND THE GRAVE and IN TOO DEEP, were two of my favorites. She leads Amy and Dan on a crazy adventure through school, Boston, and then the Swiss Alps. It was interesting to see how Amy and Dan are returning to "normal" life after their globe-trotting, and seeing them interact with Fiske Cahill was great. My only complaint here is the virtual absence of Nellie Gomez, but the typical 39 CLUES action still made me excited for the upcoming first book in the new series.

Six cards in THE 39 CLUES game are included in the front cover, and there is also a secret message to be decoded as usual. The light smattering of illustrations of key events and clues help make this volume just as great as any previous installment.

Scholastic has done something really brilliant: bringing together so many different authors on a project with good characters, plotting, and well-written action scenes. And now with the new enemy of the Vespers, things are about to get much more dangerous for the Cahills.

Protect your clues, and watch your back. And read this newest report on the Cahill family. The Vespers are rising.

Best of luck,
--A Fellow Clue-Hunter

Great Series for Teachers and Students!
By mom of 5
I ordered the first few books for my students to participate in the live webcast. Since then, my class has encouraged other students and teachers to read the books. I now have the entire series and everyone, even the teachers absolutely enjoy finding out what happens to Dan and Amy! The books are so awesome, even the teachers are excited to read to find out what comes next.

Educators, if you are ordering, these books provide a lot of insight on writing using word choice and voice. These books are great to encourage writing with students.

A new enemy
By Moon Shim
Wow! OMG! There it is!
The eleventh book in the 39 clues! I thought #10 "Into The Gauntlet" was the last in the series. Guess I was wrong.

This book has four main sections, done by four different authors. The first story is about Gideon Cahil 1507. It is the time of the plague and Gideon had suceeded in developing the cure with side effects. Now, in comes Vesper. Damien Vesper is a wealthy land lord hungry for power. He has been supporting Gideon and his works, for that, he knew Gideon is a smart man, and he could let him restore all the loots back by selling the cures. Recently, a spy reported that Gideon made something and when he took it, it made him healthy. Doubtfully, he calls upon Gideon and he, too, agrees something was going on, and Gideon wasn't telling him. That night he engaged on Gideon's laboratory, but had no success for that because Gideon had destroyed it. Soon after the destruction, the four kids split apart for their own future, leaving Olivia alone with her fifth child, Madeleine Cahill.

The second story is About Madeleine. She was caught up by Vespers and she knows that she should protect the ring at all costs, unite the family, and stay hidden. The promises, however, ended soon.

The 3rd story is mainly about young, 13 years old-Grace traveling, all the way to Casablanca, Africa in a middle of a war, to allert GSP-George S. Patton the message about some ring and a bull's eye. Through talking, she learned that GSP was a Vesper and he stole the ring. After re-stealing the ring from him, Grace heads back home, and hids the ring which in story 4, Amy and Dan recover.

In the story 4, Fisk and kids, enjoying their normal(?)-(for now) lives, a task goes up, and they (Fisk and the siblings) head to Switzerland, to get the ring out of the valts of the bank. What they retrieved, was not the ring, but the clues leading up to the ring. Furthermore, when they were still in the bank, a fake alarm went up and were the doing of the Vespers. Knowing they have short time, Amy and Dan solve the clues in a flash, and receives the ring, only finding Casper Wyoming(Vesper) upstairs waiting to steal the ring. They escaped barely, and thought it best to hid the ring in plain sight.

This book, is totally amazing, not to mention the hidden secrets, but the harmony of the four authors. The story is just like the other 39 clues books, but more exciting and thrilling. I think the series are just getting better and better.

Book is good. Printing is...not so great, but readable.
By MissK
The book itself is great. Very helpful for someone transitioning into turbine aircraft.
It covers a lot of subjects that a turbine pilot may need to know about but manages to do it in a very general way so that most of the book is helpful to you no matter what type of turbine aircraft you are going to be flying.

The only issue I have is that many of the pages are sort of...partway double printed? If that makes sense.
I've added a photo to show an example of what I'm talking about.

The first time I came across it, I thought my eyes were going blurry or I was having a stroke or something.
I looked away and nothing else looked doubled, then looked at the top of the page and it was fine. It was just the bottom 1/4 of the page or so.
I showed someone else to make sure I wasn't seeing things. They verified the partial double printing.

The double print issue isn't a HUGE deal, but be ready for it because it can be a little bit scary at first. After you realize what it is, then it's just annoying. It's not the entire book by any means, but I wish it wasn't there at all. I don't know if all of the books are like this, or just mine, but be prepared to see it so you don't get freaked out by it.

Required reading for trasitioning military pilots!
By Mike Q.
Better turbine engine explanations, descriptions, and diagrams than the military pubs I've been studying for the last 17+ years! This book and everything explained for the professional pilot are key for any military pilot to transition to the civilian market. I just got hired and my interviewer was very impressed with my turbine engine knowledge!

Fantastic interview prep
By Tick
As a military pilot going for an airline interview, this book is fantastic for the interview prep. This is brilliant at explaining things, and it seems as if he had the military pilot in mind when he wrote it. Really great review of all the applicable interview topics.

Tristram Shandy is one of English literature's most curious, complex and comic novels and is therefore perfectly suited to the distinctive, anarchic style of the celebrated cartoonist and illustrator Martin Rowson. Here Rowson travels with his faithful companion Pete through the tortuous paths of Laurence Sterne's infinitely digressive world, interpreting the great novel in a new way.

Frank Sullivan at His Best (Dover Humor), by Frank Sullivan

In the 1930s and 40s, humorist Frank Sullivan took dead aim at the American scene in hilarious pieces written for The New Yorker, the Saturday Evening Post, Town and Country, and other publications. Dispensing humorous commentary and criticisms that could be gentle or cutting, sad or sympathetic, he entertained without ever being mean-spirited or condescending.
This delightful volume includes 42 of his best pieces. Selected from three earlier collections — A Pearl in Every Oyster, The Night the Old Nostalgia Burned Down, and A Rock in Every Snowball — they include an amusingly nostalgic account of "The Passing of the Old Front Porch," a humorous recollection of campus life in "An Old Grad Remembers," and a gentle put-down of the Lone Star State in "An Innocent in Texas." Readers will also enjoy such droll fare as "A Bachelor Looks at Breakfast," "How to Change a Typewriter Ribbon," and a selection of amusing commentaries by Mr. Arbuthnot, the clich expert, on war, baseball, tabloids, and other topics.
Wonderfully good-natured, in the spirit of Robert Benchley, this vintage humor will tickle modern funny bones and keep readers chuckling at Sullivan's tongue-in-cheek comments on wealth of subjects from the not-so-distant past.

Review
The creator of hilarious pieces for a number of national publications in the 1930s and '40s, humorist Frank Sullivan took dead aim at the American scene. His amusing patter (reminiscent of the dialogue in an early Marx Brothers movie) revealed a style of tongue-in-cheek humor that could be gentle or cutting, sad or sympathetic, but never mean-spirited or condescending. Frank Sullivan At His Best features forty-seven of his best pieces including "A Bachelor Looks at Breakfast", "The Passing of the Old Front Porch", "An Innocent in Texas", and "How to Change a Typewriter Ribbon". Wonderfully good natured these entertaining selections have contemporary appeal with droll comments on a host of subjects from out of the not-so-distant past. Frank Sullivan At His Best will introduce a whole new generation to a genuine wit of the stature of Robert Benchley or Will Rogers. -- Midwest Book Review

Gentle humor from a forgotten master
By Jerry Z
Frank Sullivan is one of my favorite humorists, and this collection is a fair representation of his work. But the title is a bit misleading. Although there are many Sullivan classics in the book, including "A Garland of Ibids for Van Wyck Brooks," "The Night the Old Nostalgia Burned Down," "An Innocent in Texas," "Pencil-Chewing," "How to Change a Typewriter Ribbon," "A Bachelor Looks at Breakfast" and some of his famous "Cliche Expert" pieces, there are other pieces that do not rank among his best. Fortunately, even mediocre Sullivan is better than the best of a lot of other humorists. Unfortunately, few people have even heard of Frank Sullivan, much less read his stuff. He was a contemporary of the great Robert Benchley, and almost as good (nobody was as good as Benchley). Like Benchley, Sullivan did not write cruel or mean-spirited humor. His was of the kinder and gentler variety, much like that of Erma Bombeck and Art Buchwald, but that doesn't mean it wasn't funny. Like Benchley, Bombeck and Buchwald, Sullivan was frequently hilarious. Although he died in 1976 at age 83, and his best and most productive years were in the 1920s, '30s and '40s, Sullivan's stuff, which dealt mostly with small matters of everyday life, still has contemporary appeal. If you can find a copy of "Frank Sullivan at His Best," get it. He'll make you laugh, chuckle and smile. And these days, we need all the humor we can get.

"Not until Custer finally defeated the Indians did this nation get enough leisure to sit on the front porch..."
By Donald P. Reed
This is a review of:

"The Night The Old Nostalgia Burned Down," Frank Sullivan; Little Brown & Co. (1948-53 hardcover);

"Well, There's No Harm In Laughing" (formerly entitled, "Frank Sullivan Through the Looking Glass"), George Oppenheimer, Ed. (with an introduction by Marc Connelly); Doubleday & Co., Inc. (1970 hardcover); &

"Frank Sullivan [1892-1976] At His Best" (Introduction by Herb Galewitz); Dover Publications, Inc. (1996 paperback).

Amazon's latest bogus fad has flooded the email boxes of prospective Vine reviewers, prompting a friend to ask, derisively, "I wonder what the proper use of corsets involves?"

From "The Education of a Ganymede," Mr. Sullivan's comical, wistful account of his days as a boy working at the Saratoga Springs racetrack prior to World War I --- the highlight of which was the day when, for the first & only time he met her, he was ordered to bring a tin pail of spring water up to actress Lillian Russell's box overlooking the racetrack, for which he was tipped the then-staggering sum of one half-dollar:

"Close as was my friendship with Lillian Russell, I must admit with envy that a fellow-Saratogian of that day was even better acquainted with her.

"Master Charles Brackett [1892-1969*], a schoolmate of mine, had the undeserved good fortune to live next door to the house Miss Russell leased annually for her Saratoga visit.

"Each evening, she dressed to go to Canfield's for fish & chips. Since her house was on a secluded avenue, her maid sometimes forgot or neglected to pull down the shades of the boudoir.

"I have heard Mr. Brackett tell that the tug of war to get the diva into her corset, with the maid hauling away like a Volga boatman & L.R. clutching the bedpost, was a wondrous & awe-inspiring spectacle.

"I presume Mr. Brackett, then as now an honorable gentleman, spoke from hearsay."

*Collaborator with fellow Hollywood screen writer Billy Wilder, for many years.

***

Ineptitude often mars the creation & content of even the most successful books.

In this instance, whoever selected the "best" material from Mr. Sullivan's anthologies --- "A Pearl In Every Oyster," "A Rock in Every Snowball" & "The Night The Old Nostalgia Burned Down" (originally printed in 1938, 1946 & 1948, respectively) --- printed them without indicating which of the three books each story had originally appeared in (never mind the year in which they first appeared anywhere).

Do Frank's stories appear in the chronological order in which they were created? Perhaps the only way to find out is to obtain all three books & compare them to the contents of this one. How convenient!**

And it couldn't be more obvious that the wry, moving & timeless "Letter to a Neighbor" (a rambunctious five year-old boy) should have been the final essay --- not the half-hearted & assembled-by-rote, "It Seems There Were ---," which ends as if the author had got up to get a cup of coffee & then never returned back to his typewriter. Why was this one selected at all?

Finally, the cover design of "At His Best" is simply brilliant. Yet, the identity of & a dedication of appreciation to the artist is missing in the book's pedestrian Introduction. Herb Gauchewitz Strikes Again!

**"Street Crises of New York" (p. 1) through "The Cliche Expert Doesn't Feel Well" (p. 85) are from either "A Pearl In Every Oyster" (1938) or "A Rock in Every Snowball" (1946), since "The Night The Old Nostalgia Burnt Down" (p. 89) on out to the end of "At His Best," "It Seems There Were ---" (p. 179) are all from the original "Old Nostalgia" (1946-53), a copy of which I own.

While where the articles in the original "Old Nostalgia" first appeared is noted in an editor's note, WHEN all of these articles first appeared prior to being included in analogies will remain unknown, which is irritating because the essential context of ALL comedy is when it IS first created & published.

Also highly recommended (FIVE STARS): The memoir, "Well, There's No Harm In Laughing," (formerly entitled, "Frank Sullivan Through the Looking Glass"), George Oppenheimer, Ed. (with an introduction by Marc Connelly); Doubleday & Co., Inc. (1970 hardcover).

It features, among other vital things, stories about the Saratoga prior to World War One & on out to the early 1970s, when Frank, having returned home after a twenty-year stint in New York City as a journalist, viewed that era's comedians (i.e., Lenny Bruce) with genial contempt & inner despair.

Just imagine what, today, he would think of the reigning champion of the cheap-shot artists, Jon Stewart.

Operations Management, by Peter Jones, Peter Robinson

Operations Management is an innovative media and text package that clearly demonstrates the relevance of operations to everyday business activities. Introducing all of the core topics in a lively and engaging manner, authors Peter Jones and Peter Robinson make the material relevant and meaningful to students, including those with no background in the subject. They first introduce the unique structure of operations management before moving on to operations design and strategy, thereby mirroring what graduates will encounter in their future careers.

The text is supplemented by a unique integrated media package available on the companion website--running video case material, animated diagrams, and voiced-over quantitative models linked via QR codes in the text--that shows students how core operations theory is applied to real-world situations.

Packed full of case material and examples from companies that students can easily relate to--such as Domino's, EasyJet, and Ticketmaster--Operations Management challenges students to think about actual business issues and what they might encounter in their future careers. Real-life problems are used to carefully explain quantitative data, and links to seminal papers throughout each chapter support and strengthen the theories discussed.
The Companion Website (coming soon!) contains resources for both students and instructors:

For Students:

* Animated diagrams from the book, accompanied by audio that helps to explain concepts
* An annotated library of links to footage of "Operations in Action"
* Web-based activities
* Multiple-choice questions
* Seminal paper links
* Downloadable flashcard glossary

For Instructors:

* Customized video case material (interviews and processes tied to each chapter). Broken down into five-minute clips, these can either be shown in relation to a chapter topic or as a whole film demonstrating how one company utilizes many aspects of OM.
* Customizable PowerPoint-based slides
* Tutor guide
* Tutorial activities
* Answers to discussion questions
* Test bank
