Omar Al-Bashir and Africa's Longest War, by Paul Moorcraft

President Omar al-Bashir is Africa’s and arguably Arabia’s most controversial leader. In power since 1989, he is the first sitting head of state to be issued with an arrest warrant, for war crimes, by International Criminal Court.

He has been a central personality in Islamic and African politics, as well as a love-to-hate figure for the US in the ‘war on terror’.

For military history readers, Al-Bashir is a field marshal who has fought possibly the world’s longest conflict. Modern Sudan has been embroiled in war since 1955.

No proper biography has been written on him before. Nor has there been a comprehensive military history of Sudan. The book briefly covers the military background until independence. Then it dissects the long north-south civil war until Bashir’s Islamist military coup in 1989. Thereafter it narrates the wars in the east, south, west (in Darfur), International political and military intervention is also factored in.

The author draws on in-depth one-on-one interviews with Bashir himself and his family and close political, military and intelligence colleagues.

""Orbit-shifting Innovation" is pioneering approach that can take diverse groups and introduce new thought paradigms to drive innovation. Poorly written marketing brochure with pointless "cases".
By Jan F Sauer
I wanted to find new inspiration and methodology but instead I got a poorly written marketing brochure of 278 pages. The book offers no real insights and lists cases but misses digging deeper and explaining its rationale for the cases.
I personally recommend blue ocean strategy or books by IDEO and Illinois institute.

A brilliant explanation of what orbit-shifting innovation is and how to make it happen
By Robert Morris
An orbit-shifting innovation is among the most disruptive. As Rajiv Narang and Devika Devaiah explain, it happens "when an area that needs transformation meets an innovator with the will and the desire to create, and not follow history. At the heart of an orbit-shifting innovation is the breakthrough that creates a new orbit and achieves a transformative impact." Narang and Devaiah thoroughly examine the entire process, from initial insight to fulfillment and refinement.

They pose a question of special importance to me: "What are the real dynamics of executing an orbit-shifting innovation with as much focus as it takes to conceive it?" This book is their collaborative response to that question and duly acknowledge the valued assistance of their colleagues at Erehwon, a 20-year-old pioneering innovation firm.

So what drives their insights concerning orbit-shifting? They suggest three powerful sources: Hundreds of breakthrough innovation missions in which they have been involved thus far, leadership mindsets that they have studied for more than two decades of working with senior management teams, and direct experience with more than 100 "orbit shifters" that they have identified thus far. In other words, the information, insights, and counsel they provide is experience-driven, evidence-driven, and anchored in real-world business experience, theirs and others'.

They carefully organize and present their material as follows:

Part 1: Orbit shifts that created history
Part 2: Seeding orbit-shifting innovation
Part 3: Combating dilution in execution
Part 4: Leading orbit-shifting innovation

I agree with Narang and Devaiah that the most valuable insights, those that lead to breakthroughs, do not emerge during a process to generate as many ideas as possible; innovation does not equal ideation. Rather, innovation emerges as boundaries are identified. "This book surfaces our painful realization that most big ideas don't get killed; they just get diluted." That is to say, big ideas are reduced in terms of their potential value and impact.

By nature, orbit-shifts involve significant change. There are always barriers to such change and often cultural in nature, the result of what James O'Toole so aptly characterizes as "the ideology of comfort and the tyranny of custom." That is to say, big ideas are reduced in terms of their potential threat to the status quo and its defenders.

More often than not, Narang and Devaiah suggest, executing a breakthrough insight is more difficult than formulating it. They also stress the importance of an "out of the box challenge" that requires thinking beyond the given "box" or context. Only then can an orbit-shifting idea be generated.

Over the years, I have been retained to assist with hundreds of innovation initiatives and, with rare exception, the greatest challenge to those involved was to think innovatively about innovation. This is what Albert Einstein had in mind when asserting that problems can't be solved with the same thinking that created them.

Innovative thinking should be sustained in any organization, whatever its size and nature may be, and at all levels and in all areas of the given enterprise. I agree with Narang and Devaiah that this process is best viewed as a never-ending journey - a series of orbit-shifting projects -- rather than limited to any one of them. If a workplace environment is thought of as a greenhouse, potentially big ideas are seedlings that must be carefully nourished...and protected.

When concluding their book, Rajiv Narang and Devika Devaiah observe, "Whether in fiction or reality, the most enduring stories, the ones that excite us the most, are thee ones of orbit shifters, where ordinary people achieve the extraordinary. Where they create history, rather than follow it. Where they show us that there are no impossible dreams or problems, only limited dreamers and problem solvers."

Through human history, there have been thousands of breakthrough ideas and that process will continue in months and years to come. New dreams will pose exciting new opportunities and new problems will present exciting new challenges. We would be well-advised, meanwhile, to keep in mind an astute observation by Richard Dawkins: "Yesterday's dangerous idea is today's orthodoxy and tomorrow's clich."

Very Thought Provoking Discussion
By Beth
This is an incredibly dense book that reads more like a textbook so if you're expecting light, motivational business ideas this is not for you. It is also unfortunately printed in rather small text which is packed onto the page with very small margins which can quickly lead to a loss of focus for the reader. Thankfully the chapters are split into smaller sections so it is relatively easy to find your place again when you pause and then pick the book back up.

If you ignore the book's physical shortcomings this is a very thought provoking discussion of innovation and what it means for people and business. It covers topics ranging from healthcare to technology and provides numerous examples of innovation in the world.

If you can keep your focus through the many challenges to reading that this book presents it's really a very good read and well worth the time investment.

Foods That Act Like Medications

From ANTICANCER: A New Way of Life by David Servan-Schreiber, MD, PhD

Foods That Act Like Medications

If certain foods in our diet can act as fertilizers for tumors, others, to the contrary, harborprecious anticancer molecules. As recent discoveries show, these go far beyond the usual vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

In nature, when confronted with aggression, vegetables can neither fight nor flee. To survive, they must be armed with powerful molecules capable of defending them against bacteria, insects, and bad weather. These molecules are phytochemical compounds with antimicrobial, antifungal, and insecticide properties that act on the biological mechanisms of potentialaggressors. They also have antioxidant properties that protect the plant’s cells from dampnessand the sun’s rays (by preventing cellular “rust” from forming when the cell’s fragile mechanismsare exposed to the corrosive effects of oxygen).

Plums, Peaches, and Nectarines: It’s Time for Stone Fruit

Berries have recently found some competition: peaches, plums, nectarines, etc. (collectivelyknown as stone fruit), whose anticancer virtues were previously unknown. According to agroup of researchers in Texas who reviewed more than a hundred species, these fruits—particularlyplums—are at least as rich in anticancer elements as small berries. In this time ofeconomic recession, it’s good to know that a single plum contains as many antioxidants as ahandful of berries and costs far less. In laboratory tests, stone fruits have also demonstratedtheir efficacy against breast cancer cells and cholesterol.

Probiotics

The intestines ordinarily contain “friendly” bacteria, which help digestion and facilitate regularbowel movements. They also play an important stabilizing role for the immune system.Among the most common of these bacteria are Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillusbifidus.

It has been demonstrated that these probiotics inhibit the growth of colon cancer cells.Their effect on the facilitation of bowel movements also lowers the risk of colon cancer by reducingthe time the intestines are exposed to carcinogenic substances in food. Probiotics thusalso play a role in detoxification. In addition, according to a 2006 Korean study, probiotics improvethe performance of the immune system, as well as increasing the number of NK cells.Organic yogurts and kefir are good sources of probiotics. Soy yogurts are usually enrichedwith probiotics. These precious bacteria are also found in sauerkraut and kimchi. Finally, certain foods are prebiotics, which means they contain polymers of fructose, whichstimulate the growth of probiotic bacteria. Examples are garlic, onions, tomatoes, asparagus, bananas, and wheat.

Green Tea

Rich in polyphenols, including catechins (and particularly epigallocatechin gallate-3, orEGCG), which reduce the growth of the new vessels needed for tumor growth and metastases. It is also a powerful antioxidant and detoxifier (activating enzymes in the liver that eliminatetoxins from the body), and it facilitates the death of cancer cells by apoptosis. In the laboratory,it enhances the effects of radiotherapy on cancer cells.

Turmeric and Curry

Turmeric (the yellow powder that is one of the components of yellow curry) is the most powerfulnatural antiinflammatory identified today. It also helps stimulate apoptosis in cancercells and inhibit angiogenesis. In the laboratory, it enhances the effectiveness of chemotherapyand reduces tumor growth.

Take note: To be assimilated by the body, turmeric must be mixed with black pepper(not simply with peppers). Ideally, it must also be dissolved in oil (olive, canola, or linseed oil, preferably). In store-bought curry mixes, turmeric represents only 20 percent of the total. Soit’s better to obtain turmeric powder directly.

Recommendations for use: Mix teaspoon of turmeric powder with tablespoon ofolive oil and a generous pinch of black pepper. Add to vegetables, soups, and salad dressings.A few drops of agave nectar can remove the slightly bitter taste.

Ginger

Ginger root also acts as a powerful antiinflammatory and an antioxidant (more effectivethan vitamin E, for example) and has protective effects. It acts against certain cancer cells. Moreover, it helps reduce the creation of new blood vessels. A ginger infusion tea also helpsalleviate nausea from chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

Recommendations for use: Add grated ginger to a vegetable mix while it is cooking in awok or frying pan. Or marinate fruits in lime juice and grated ginger (a touch of agave nectarmay be added for those who prefer more sweetness). Make an infusion by cutting a smallpiece of ginger (about an inch) into slices and steeping in boiling water for ten to fifteenminutes. Can be drunk hot or cold.

Cruciform Vegetables

Cabbages (brussels sprouts, bok choy, Chinese cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, etc.) containsulforaphane and indole-3-carbinols (I3Cs), which are powerful anticancer molecules. Sulforaphaneand I3Cs are capable of detoxifying certain carcinogenic substances. They preventprecancerous cells from developing into malignant tumors. They also promote the suicideof cancer cells and block angiogenesis. In 2009, at the Cancer Research Center of the Universityof Pittsburgh, biologist Dr. Shivendra Singh and his team studied the impact of sulforaphane—an antioxidant contained in cruciform vegetables—on prostate cancer in mice.

They made two radical new discoveries. First, consumption of sulforaphane three times aweek considerably increases the action of NK cells against tumors (by more than 50 percent).Second, tumor-carrying rats that consumed sulforaphane were shown to have half as muchrisk of developing metastases as those that did not.

Take note: Avoid boiling cabbage and broccoli. Boiling risks destroying sulforaphaneand I3Cs.

Recommendations for use: Cover and steam briefly or stir-fry rapidly in a wok with alittle olive oil.

Life changing for me
By Ellen Marsh
It came as a total shock when I found out I had a brain tumor in October, 2009. I am a non-smoker, a vegetarian, I've always been slim and I exercised 3-4 days a week. I'd seen this book before my diagnosis and thought it looked good, but didn't buy it. I thought I didn't need it.

Once I realized the author also had brain cancer and had been able to keep it in check for over 15 years through diet and other means, I knew this was the book for me. If you want to learn how to do something, go to someone who has done it! So I bought the book. It's an easy read and is backed up by scientific research and 28 pages of footnotes in case you want to learn more. The book is very specific in its recommendations.

I took the plunge around Christmas, 2009 and have been following the diet ever since. I underwent a year of chemotherapy treatments at the same time. During that time I periodically had MRI's that showed the tumor was shrinking. The tumor has continued to shrink even after I finished chemotherapy in January, 2011, so the diet change and supplements are having the intended effect.

Reading this book and changing what I eat has been incredibly empowering for me. I thought I knew a lot about nutrition before, but I learned some important things from Dr. Servan-Schreiber:

- Vegetables to eat daily (broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, all cabbages)
- Good oils to use (olive and canola)
- Spices to add (garlic, ginger, turmeric)

I also learned some sobering facts about sugar (see page 61):

"The German biologist Otto Heinrick Warburg won the Nobel Prize in medicine for his discovery that the metabolism of malignant tumors is largely dependent on glucose consumption. (Glucose is the form of digested sugar in the body.) In fact the PET scan commonly used to detect cancer simply measures the areas in the body that consume the most glucose. If a particular area stands out because it consumes too much sugar, cancer is very likely the cause."

I never thought I could kick the sugar habit, but after the first two weeks it wasn't hard. I found substitutes to feed my sweet tooth - berries, fruits, cinnamon, stevia, and baker's chocolate (which is unsweetened) with any of the above.

If you have the right motivation I believe you can do just about anything. My plan is to live well and long!

UPDATE:
July 4, 2016 - It has been over seven years since my first symptoms of a brain tumor appeared. My latest MRI (in April) showed no tumor growth. I still eat an anticancer diet (very low in sugar, high in green vegetables, garlic, onions). I've changed my lifestyle in other ways too, but diet and supplements are key components for me.

I keep doing this for a few reasons:

1. The diet works.
My MRI images have shown a dramatic decrease in the size of the tumor even after I completed a year of chemotherapy in January, 2011.

2. I needed to do something between MRI appointments to take control of my health. This limits my anxiety to a few days before each MRI rather than thinking about it all the time. I can concentrate on other things besides my health. For this, I am SO grateful.

3. I actually enjoy the food I eat.
It takes some time to learn how to eat healthier, but once you find ways to make healthy food taste really great, why would you want to go back?

Finally - the information we need to learn
By CKC
I am a two-time breast cancer survivor of 11 1/2 years with a strong faith in God, but cancer is a scary thing that can just get to you over and over again. Anticancer: A New Way of Life, spoke both to my heart and to my head. I am "in remission" (I strongly prefer a shorter word - cured). However, there's one cancer marker that keeps creeping up ever so slightly and making me lose sleep at night although there is still no clinical sign of cancer 3 years after recurrence. I tell you this not to wear my heart on my sleeve but as evidence that I have more than just a passing experience with the subject matter of this book.

This is the best nutritional resource I have found thusfar on this journey (equally useful for those of you who want to avoid the ride). Dr. Servan-Schreiber has "been there" and brings a perspective to the topic that you can't have unless you have walked the road personally. He has approached the topic of how to best equip your body for maximum health in the face of cancer in a realistic, intelligent and science-based way. The statement by Dr. Mendelsohn, President of MD Anderson, in the introduction about this book filling "an important gap in our knowledge of how patients can contribute to their own care by supplementing conventional medical treatment" really persuaded me to make the purchase.

Most important insights gained: There is something (actually a lot of somethings) that we can do to better equip our bodies to fight cancer - diet, exercise, sleep, stress relief. Finally, I have an outline of food suggestions with footnotes to the research itself and even a shopping list to eat what my body needs - no excuses. We were pretty healthy eaters to beging with (well, I was more than my hubby), but, after reading this book, I told my husband that I was taking over the cooking (and he's a fabulous cook), throwing out all white flour and sugar products, filling the fridge with colorful fruits and veggies, experimenting with a variety of alternative grains, buying healthy sweetening alternatives and eating less meat and more fish. I have gone from craving chips to craving strawberries, cherries, and even loving brussel sprouts (with lots of garlic, of course).

The key benfit has been the empowerment I have felt from making these changes. When you finish cancer treatment, you ask the Dr what can I do to help myself. The Dr's answer is usually - "go live your life." Your first thought is, "yea, that didn't work out so well the first time (or for me the 2nd either). Dr's can't prescribe food because there is no "double blind randomized human trial" behind it. If they did, they would be open to a lawsuit if things didn't turn out well. Besides that, food people aren't the ones making sales calls on the medical community, because as Dr. Servan-Schreiber says, there's no patent money in raspberries! This book provides concrete information about food science that I have found nowhere else in a single source, coupled with Servan-Schreibers insights as both an MD and a cancer patient.

So, I actually bought multiple copies of this book and gave one to my oncologist and one to my radiation oncologist, told them I was giving this a try and asked them to read it. They can't make recommendations, but they can legally say, "here's a book you might want to buy and read." I have challenged them to do just that.

My husband and I have been "eating new" for a month. I feel fabulous and he has lost 15 lbs. We are also taking more time to do things now rather than being so darn responsible and overworked - we got a new puppy and we are having a ball! Work is still there, but I am learning to "let it go." This may not change the outcome of my journey, but I can tell you that I have used the practical suggestions in this book to make some important changes that are making the journey better, more relaxed and just more fun. The "I shoulds" have become more "I want tos."

Thank you Dr. David, for opening your heart and sharing your insights. I know you say you don't believe in God, but I can see how he has used you in my life just like he did in the young man you mention in the book. You have shown that you are open to change - I think that your journey has a lot more to do with finding faith than you want to admit.

My Cancer Fighting Bible
By Cheri
This is THE book to have if you or someone you love has cancer. When my husband was diagnosed with incurable, stage IV kidney cancer, I wanted to do anything in my power to keep him healthy for as long as possible. I'm in charge of the cooking, so that's where I started. His oncologist and dietician told us we didn't need to change his diet. That was pretty shocking to me, I've always believed if you feed your body healthy things, it will be better able to fight disease. While we were cheking out after seeing the doctor, one of his nurses quietly said to me, "Sugar feeds cancer. Cut out the sugar." That sent me on an all out search for the best cancer diet I could manage - and I knew I wasn't going to get it from hospital staff. I found this book just randomly searching the web, and it was the only book I needed to buy. I bought several more, but "Anticancer: A New Way of Life" has been, far and beyond, the most informative and motivating thing I've read. Thanks to David Servan-Schreiber, I have slowly, but steadily removed cancer-feeding foods from our home. We no longer use cleaning supplies or hygene products with toxic ingredients. My husband is still with us after two years of fighting, and is still doing pretty well. I have personally gotten much healthier and dropped 20 pounds by cutting out the bad stuff.
My copy is dog-eared and written in. I've got notes on most of the pages and lots of things are highlighted. There's tons of information that your oncologist isn't going to give you, but you need to know. It was a God send for us. Every cancer patient should own a copy.

Operation Nimrod: The Iranian Embassy Siege, by Russell Phillips

The truth behind the SAS' most famous mission.

Drawing on extensive research, Operation Nimrod dispels the myths and reveals the truth of those six long days, and the dramatic rescue that thrust the SAS into the public eye.

On 29th April 1980, British police assured Iran that their embassy was secure. The very next day, terrorists stormed the embassy and took twenty-six hostages. With the Iranian government willing to let the hostages become martyrs, and the British government only willing to talk if the terrorists surrendered, twenty-six lives hung in the balance.

What followed was six days of tension and terror. It was finally ended when the SAS launched a daring rescue mission, broadcast live on television. Millions held their breath, waiting to see the outcome of Operation Nimrod.

Years after this event it is still necessary to pause and remember the impact of those brave decisions, and more importantly, the actions of those brave men who showed no compromise to terrorism.
They gave us the standards so that we could deal with the problems.

Ninth-century Saxon England crumbles under the onslaught of a relentless foe - the Danish Vikings. Ceridwen, a young woman with divided loyalties, watches as the peace and plenty she enjoys at the Saxon stronghold of Kilton gives way to wary watchfulness. Her dearest friend, Ælfwyn, sold in marriage to a Dane in a desperate bid for peace, travels to Kilton and recounts the events that befell the fortress of Four Stones in captured Lindisse. But Ceridwen is also confronted by Sidroc, the Dane she ran from, and cannot forget. Ceridwen's life revolves around her beloved husband Gyric, rendered now unfit for battle and seemingly, for happiness. At the heart of Kilton is Gyric's brother Godwin, the young lord who struggles both against the Danish invaders and an unthinkable desire. Growing tensions between the brothers mirror the escalating threat to the Saxons from the Danes. The Fate of all at Kilton hangs in the balance at a single terrifying battle...

From the Back Cover
Epic...immensely satisfying...an impressive achievement - Historical Novel Society

Randolph's epic four-part Viking-era saga takes place in a ninth-century world caught in the grinding gears of multiple religions - the old Saxon gods, the gods of the invading Vikings, plus the Trinity and attending saints of the hardscrabble Christianity that is trying with uneven success to implant itself in England and Ireland.

The bulk of this story-cycle centers on a young woman, Ceridwen, as she grows into womanhood and has a series of adventures in a world made increasingly violent and unpredictable by the clashing of rival armies and faiths. Randolph has extensively researched her chosen era, and her books are very intentionally pitched at a pre-modern pace, designed to unfold gradually despite their sometimes-hectic action segments. We follow Ceridwen through fractured friendships, tormented loves, and the tragedies of war.

The broader, relaxed tempo of the four novels really allows her -- and her world -- to become real in the reader's imagination, and this aura of complexity is enhanced by the fact that Randolph never stoops to one-dimensional bad guys, be they Christian monks or Viking raiders.

Each of these volumes is immensely satisfying, and the four-book sequence as a whole is an impressive achievement. - Historical Novel Society February 2015

About the Author
I write the kind of book I want to read myself. I write about history as a way to better understand my own times. I write about people who are far better, and (I hope) far worse than myself. And beautiful objects inspire me: the hand-carved combs, skilfully wrought swords, and gemmed goblets of the world of The Circle of Ceridwen Saga. Almost everything interests me; I've studied Anglo-Saxon and Norse runes, and learnt to spin with a drop spindle. My path has led to extensive on-site research in England, Denmark, Sweden, Iceland, and Gotland - some of the most wonderful places on Earth. My other works include the novella The Tale of Melkorka, based on a story from the Icelandic Sagas, and Ride:A Novella, a retelling of the story of Lady Godiva, first published in Narrative Magazine. I've been the fortunate recipient of fellowships at the MacDowell Colony, Ledig House International, and Byrdcliffe. Hearing from readers is a special pleasure and I always answer my letters. So write to me! www.octavia.net is my website.

This second sequel picked up th pace of this series of books with gusto. Again it portrays its characters vivid personalities reflecting their strong & weak point, their wishes , desires & dreams. It's carefully researched historical data creates a world in which it's reader can feel, smell, hear, taste and witness life in the 800s in Saxony England. History in its most intriguing format; life in progress as though the reader is actually living these days. In addition, the religious conflicts of both Christians and "heathens" show the differences & similarities between the two beliefs. There is a good deal of action &battle strategy , which makes a reader sit on the edge of his/her chair during a good portion of the book. Thank you, Olivia, for this fantastic sequel. I more than look forward to Book three & I know you just released Book 5, but I hope you may even consider a Book 6! This series would make a great movie!

Ceridwen of Kilton is Her-story by choice!
By Sarah NightBear
The saga of Ceridwen is Her-Story and I believe the timing of this series to emerge in our current time is Godddess sent! I am currently re-reading the entire series of the Circle of Ceridwen, as my desire was so strong to follow the complete and long story-line, knowing that I would have to go back to get what I had missed. Not too many written stories are worthy of a second read. This one is because it is not a romantic version of past noble cultures. But what this series does is shine a light brightly on the Feminine Goddess cultures of the Danes, the Angle-Saxon, and Welsh, with a dimmer light, almost a lurking, on the Roman Catholic left on this island from Frankland. All dominions seem to have a common thread of being related: the vying for self-sufficiency and sovereignty, with a deep reverence for the relationship to the land itself and to one another in those endeavors. Compared to our current time this saga I believe is divinely sent and impeccable: one I highly recommend following to allow the Feminine qualities of all life forms to emerge fully within us again as we seek collective power that nurtures life instead of neglecting and destroying it.

We witness in today's world such deep disconnection from the land that most people hardly know the earth as a beautiful gifted living being of abundance of which we are dependent upon. Daily headlines bombard the mind with total disregard for any sanctity in living and that in itself is a conditioning haze (vale) to the spirit of humankind, creating havoc, chaos, and unhappiness with the need to escape reality. Except escaping doesn't change realities.

It is in this second book, Ceridwen of Kilton, that I begin to grapple to unravel a couple of concepts: the price of war and peace between Lords and its relationship to the "bride-price" and the "duty-bound" beliefs of the females and males to their hierarchies. I feel these issues are for me the reader to work out and not the responsibility of the author, for more shall be reveled in its due time. However, as I witness Ceridwen desiring her husband's brother who rules Kilton (who has no male heir) I see she as female in this hereditary estate feels either a duty-bound call to provide that heir and sexual intercourse is carried out despite the church induced condemnation of doing so or she is delusional about who Cedric truly is. And I get a strong since of both a true.

In this second book of this series I view the real and the imaginary passions that drive human nature. The feminine Goddess qualities live in all the female characters, no matter which culture is being presented. And the males reverence to them is surprisingly correct only because they (the males) know 'tis true that the Goddess lives and rules life: the sea, the land, the wind, the foods, and decides decides who lives and who dies. There are keepers of Earth Wisdoms and Stories that survive isolation and impoverishment, a keeping of true records by memory with repetitive oration, not forgetting the stories of the past.

There is the reality of human desire for more, for wanting the best, to be known and equally important to others outside one's own culture and even for justifiable vengeance. But in that human chaos of proving one's worth is a moral and social obligation that is equal to its opposites of moral integrity and justice. There is a balance of cultures that has steadily declined in the governance of peoples over time and female positions were completely obliterated in governance of any realm except for that of the church. In the Ceridwen saga the females are highly intelligent, strongly nurturing while managing the functions of their Halls which they serve and govern, and are heard and revered during a time when serving was an honour and was contagious to visitors and guests. Life was worth living and wanted fully by everyone.

The males are truly warriors with the highest degree of skills in all mannerisms especially in battle, insuring the success of their Hall by being truthful story tellers of both their victories and failures: truth prevails among warriors. While the male desire for the female is strong enough to kill for, the choice is always left to the female and this is another important theme in life unfolding. The male figures did not 'take' women for themselves and were not violent with them in this historic-fiction even during the heat of passion: manliness had virtues, an honor code known among all, as did the feminine. We do get to see that mistakes were made during the heat of youthful desires and what followed as destiny or even karmic energy.

Ceridwen is of course the most wonderful person of the story-line who has three different cultures of this timeline in her memory, which define who she is, plus the new ones she will encounter in her future. From start to finish we see that the flourishing of human dignity is a personal choice and the strong bonds between females only benefits strong relationships with the males. There is no sin in the natural pagan Goddess culture (yet an honour code to keep) so I the reader experience what it is to be fully human, in love, sacrifice, decision making, and commitments. And it is exciting to learn about the Moon-Calendar Celebrations that are observed annually by the Goddess cultures.

I began to deeply relate to Ceridwen early in the saga in many aspects: having no Mother's love and nurturing to provide associated female behaviors, the social isolation, being raised by family and the church, and the excitement for a future unknown to her. With these aspects in her divine design she was unfettered of female-male skill imprinting. I sense Ceridwen's yearning for sisterly bonds which she was raised without but that destiny provides her where needs are reciprocated duly by her personal choice.

The peoples of this time-period are tribal, clans, and kingdoms who may not have been conscious of the unification of cultures of the moment but they definitely experienced the benefits of unification, isolated as they were from other civilizations and cultures. Isolation is a major theme presented deeply in the main cultural characters, which I will leave for the reader to discover on their own, being watchful for the themes that create the reality of peace and unity while the saga unfolds.

The prominent imagery that stands out to me the very most in book two is the cultural hierarchy that works as a governing system. I know another such hierarchical system among many of the Coastal Salish Villages that exists in the present and never died even though the governments forbid its practice. There is an hereditary order that is kept through bloodlines and adoption but even as importantly are the rituals and celebrations that show one's greatness among Nations in your own hall: a divine order. The giving of gifts of great worth merely make the bond a more endearing pledge or treaty. I followed slowly the segment of the treaty made between the King of Wessex and King of the Danes. This is a complete replica of the Ancient honor-code among ruling classes and was kept as a sacred document to always be honoured. Treaty breakers usually don't live long as a nation of people. The First Nations of Canada and all Indigenous Nations of North America have experienced over 500 years of treaty lie after lie until no honour exists in them. Also in this hierarchy segment our beloved figure Ceridwen gives the new born babe over to the brother and wife moments after birth: an adoption. I know a very similar story where a sister gave her new born to her sister so she would have happiness in her life. It's real love for others whose happiness is just as important as others! What about surrogate mothers for those who are not able to birth? Is this not what this ended up being? Rather than condemn the action, understand it fully for what it holds in the Sisterhood of the Goddess circle: everyone belongs to each other.

Another aspect I am enjoying learning in this second book is the archaic words so perfectly placed that make this story authentic oral history. Our greatest gift is our cultural language that usually only remotely is translatable into English. English is not a cultural language. English is a trade language like the Tchnouk Jargon of the Columbia River regions. Trade languages are garbled and lack gender identity so it cannot be cultural. All of this we see in the current attack upon Indigenous Peoples worldwide: the oppressing invaders of territory kill enough to frighten the remaining community into submission: terrorism tactics.

Another very similar protocol of these Nations that emerge in book two that are similar to the Coastal Salish nation is that of animal totems that give the people strength and many gifts of that animal: so far there is upon the marriage bed the carved Dragon and the Danes have a battle-flag symbol of the Raven. Symbolism is extremely important to cultures and the way we think, believe, and act.

Lastly, how can I not truly admire, and even covet, the Dane warchief Sidroc of Four Stones who sees Ceridwen as Shieldmaiden, one so like of his own culture but is of Welsh identity and origin. I witness Ceridwen's "destiny" as she chooses her actions along her journey. She had just re-pledged her eternal love to Cedric the one she previously saved from dying at Sidroc's Hall seven years earlier. And now whispers into Sidroc's ear to meet her at the pear grove later. The circle is unending to themes of great importance in this chapter and this is certainly one of them.

I give high regard to the author, Octavia Randolph of the Circle of Ceridwen saga, for choosing the right ancient customs as themes in each chapter. There are many such systems that work far better for life than dictatorship orders because they are sustainable systems. And did you happen to notice and research the list of medicinal herbal treatments that were freely given in book two? I did and believe me, they are worth their weight in gold, as is a second reading of Ceridwen of Kilton.

who has loved her for years and calls her Shield Maiden
By cheryl snider
This is my second reading of book two. The first reading was done quickly and voraciously, as I could not get enough of Ceridwen's story. Now, I have noticed the richness of the character's and their depth of emotions. I have witnessed Ceridwen's courage in times of war, and her bond with Geric enabling the survival of brother Godwin, through her verbal instruction. She and Geric surrendered her child to ensure Godwin have an heir, bringing back his estranged wife to Kilton. And lastly, the Dane man named Sidroc, who has loved her for years and calls her Shield Maiden, visits Kilton in times of peace. Meeting in secret, she remains faithful to Geric, while he reaffirms his love. Yet she thinks of him in her quiet moments, and will send her son Ceric to him for training when he is 12. This book is a time of war and struggle, as the history of Wessex, the invading Danes and King Alfred unfolds.
