Essential ideas for Inspired Leadership

This book is about leadership which is a key role of the board. The ability to lead by inspiring and influencing is key to success in the egalitarian world of the boardroom. This book explains how that is achieved.
As with all Matt’s work, it is well researched, comes with plenty of references for additional reading on the topic and is packed with insights that extend current knowledge. Unfortunately it is written for the individual rather than for the group and, as such, requires a little translation to become relevant to a board. It is, however, well worth that effort and immensely valuable as it stands.
From the point of view of an individual company director this book is invaluable. It gives insights on how to create and amplify motivation. These are backed up with solid science and real life examples. That means the interested reader can do more research or find other ways to apply the ideas.
I wish Wylie had given a little more thought to creating a quality product. The cheap 'pulp fiction' paper and soft thin cover belie the value of the information and I just know my copy is going to become dog eared and crumpled. This book deserves better and it is one that readers will return to again and again. Perhaps I should recommend the Kindle edition over the print version. Either way; I do recommend it and very highly.

If there's a 'handbook' for contemporary leadership, this is it.
If you need a book to check out on your Kindle or hide in your desk drawer to know how to inspire and influence the team, this is it. This is a rich, rewarding and thoroughly inspiring book - at every chapter. I love the depth of models, thinking, examples and advice in each chapter. From explaining about the ideas and memes suited to today's leaders, through to the content of leaders in action, and the 12 brilliant techniques of leaders as amplifiers. So many leadership books and courses are limp, weak and cliched. Not this. I found it refreshing, new, but most of all current. It's applicable to workplace leaders, community leaders, family leaders. The depth of Matt Church's research, stories, case studies and creativity made this a practical, applicable read. Loved it. So much so, you don't need to hide it in your desk drawer; leave it on show. Spread the word. That's what amplifiers do.

What's more to say? This is the authoritative, the definitive volume for luminescence experiments from theory to all of the most useful applications. It is readable, dense, useful and indispensable if you do fluorescence, lifetime measurements, energy transfer studies, etc., etc.

Of all the reference books I have on fluorescence spectroscopy, Dr. Lakowicz's book is the most comprehensive. It is a masterpiece. His book covers many aspects of fluorescent biological systems but it also treats inorganic systems. The foundations of fluorescence and fluorescence spectroscopy are quite comprehensive and very well covered. This is an excellent text and reference book for any person involved not only in bio-related research, but in any discipline involving fluorescence.

Nothing to do with rubbish collection of chapters made of friends and friends of friends and me-too sections, called books...

This is an excellent book, as all useful reference books should be, like those of the old times: well written with a unique logic line, uniform notations and plots. Among others, quite low price for the quality of paper and number of pages. I would even say that this is a very good introductory book: it worked well with me, an EE.

Good reminder of already used good practices

One of the things I liked was that the authors acknowledged that teachers are being overwhelmed and need to be seen asthenosphere true driving force in improving education for all students. If you look at each foundation separately, you'll see that they are all things we learned in college/certification classes. They just put them all together and reminded us of how these practices can help us if we see past all the pressure put on us. At the very least, this book is a good refresher for a teacher needing a pep up to carry on with a smile.

Quality Formula

I ordered this last week and when it came in the mail yesterday, I just had to read it! Finished it this morning, and although it's highlighted up, my plan is to reread it many times before school begins again in August. My other task, is to encourage my teachers to read it and hopefully begin implementing the Fundamental 5 in their classrooms.

Our campus is a Title 1 campus and our state scores have gone down in the last two years. We have to come up with a plan; how can we increase our achievement? What Cain and Laird put in this book is not rocket science. If you've been in education for any length of time, the things they talk about are things that you know. But, have you ever put them together for an extended period of time? That's what the fundamental 5 is. Combining lesson frames, working in the power zone, frequent, small-group, purposeful talk, recognition and reinforcement and critical writing to create a formula for quality instruction.

What I liked most about this book, as an administrator, is that it is a quick read, but it's jam packed with great information. There is no fluff included, like in some other books I've read. The authors have been in education in various capacities and have seen first hand what they are talking about. They give explicit examples and explain the formula and it's components in a way that even a first year teacher can understand. I'm truly amazed at how much information is packed into this short book! It is one I will be recommending to many!

I have been following Mr. Cain's blog for awhile as he has worked with many campuses and principals that I am familiar with. His work has been proven and comes highly recommended by others in the field.

An Easy Read!

I liked how easy it was to read this book. There was not a lot of extra mumbo jumbo to dig through before you got to the meat. The authors got straight to the point with every step. I do, however, feel that this book was geared more towards secondary teachers and might be a bit more difficult for the elementary teachers to use with their students. I actually really like the idea of implementing the Fundamental Five. The strategies definitely made sense to me and I liked how the authors backed everything up with some data and statistics. For me, that really added to the validity of the process. Also, I liked that you can use the lessons that you've used previously in your classroom. I don't feel like I would be expected to recreate every lesson I've taught....and that is a GREAT thing!

A highly-accessible introduction to mass transfer problems in environmental engineering and science.

Chemical transport processes in environmental systems are exceptionally complex and notoriously difficult to model. Unlike equations derived for homogenous, well-defined environments in chemical production, for example, equations derived for environmental systems rely upon calculations made for highly heterogeneous, often poorly defined environments consisting of a great many phases and chemicals. Unfortunately, texts on chemical transport usually focus on problems related to chemical process engineering, making it exceedingly difficult for environmental engineers to model processes in natural and engineered systems.

This book provides practicing engineers and graduate students with a clear, comprehensive introduction to transport processes in environmental systems. Structured to suit a one-semester, introductory course on the subject, it begins with the basics of molecular diffusion and chemical partitioning and then progresses to more advanced topics including dispersion, particle transport, fractals, and biofilms. Throughout, the author places an equal emphasis on both engineered and natural systems. Each chapter draws on realistic examples and problems to reinforce important concepts.

Environmental Transport Processes is an ideal first textbook for environmental engineering students who have never studied mass transport, as well as undergraduate and graduate chemical engineering students with little or no experience in environmental topics. About the Author

Bruce E. Logan is the Stan and Flora Kappe Professor of Environmental Engineering, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Penn State. He is Director of the Engineering Energy & Environmental Institute and the Hydrogen Energy (H2E) Center. Dr. Logan has won several awards for his research and articles and has authored Microbial Fuel Cells, also from Wiley.

Hybrid Reference/Teaching - Failure in Both

This textbook is NOT helpful in the slightest. I was a student of the author of this book, required to purchase it for class.

It is a strange mix of a reference book morphed into a classroom text that succeeds at neither. The material is presented in a non-linear fashion, derivations overlook key steps, notation is dated and inconsistent, there are references to material in the previous edition that is now absent, and there are numerous typos/misprints.

The manner in which information is presented will you frustrated. It doesn't build or scaffold based on prior knowledge or what you've learned in previous sections/chapters. You spend less time digesting the material and building upon your knowledge than you do deciphering it. It's as if parts were written by half a dozen people with different ideas and slapped together haphazardly. The result is just poorly written - period.

To Teachers/Professors - Don't design a class around the way material is presented in this textbook.
To Students - If you're stuck having to use this text, make the professor go through ALL the missing derivations and emphasizes building knowledge as you progress through chapters. Presented in the right fashion, the material in this book is easily understandable, but this book is most certainly NOT laid out in a manner conducive to that goal.

This book was fresh new when I started taking the class and the professor gave a lot of corrections for the typos in the book. In my opinion this book is not helpful if you're starting the topic - and as a student I was... It is like a reference book but not that one either...

Overall disappointing book given the title that includes "What it's really like to start, run and profitably sell a vineyard & winery". I am an amateur wine maker and based on the title of the book, I thought this might help me decide if starting a small winery is really within the realm of possibility. Some interesting material but didn't learn much. Only financial information that was shared was about first year planting costs. That was good but not much else. Very little else about operating costs or anything else related to make decisions about starting, running, or certainly selling such a business. A few items about equipment costs but not much. Absolutely nothing about selling such a business, although that isn't why I bought the book.

Strongly recommended! Written as an anecdotal story of wine business life, this book provides real life experiences regarding day-to-day operations at a vineyard and winery. Consider this: a text book would tell you to use netting to protect the crop; this book talks about the what a pain in the neck certain types of netting can be; and that's something you wouldn't typically get from more technical sources. Of course, we must still buy and read the textbooks but supplement your reading with this book, you won't be disappointed.
