This is the second edition of this assembly language programming textbook introducing programmers to 64 bit Intel assembly language. The primary addition to the second edition is the discussion of the free integrated development environment, ebe, designed by the author specifically to meet the needs of assembly language programmers. Ebe is a Python program which uses the Tkinter and Pwm widget sets to implement a GUI environment consisting of a source window, a data window, a registers window, a console window, a terminal window and a project window. The source window includes a full-featured text editor with convenient controls for assembling, linking and debugging a program. The project facility allows a program to be built from C source code files and assembly source files. Assembly is performed automatically using the yasm assembler and linking is performed with ld or gcc. Debugging operates by transparently sending commands into the gdb debugger while automatically displaying registers and variables after each debugging step. The book is intended as a first assembly language book for programmers experienced in high level programming in a language like C or C++. The assembly programming is performed using the yasm assembler automatically from the ebe IDE under the Linux operating system. The book primarily teaches how to write assembly code compatible with C programs. The reader will learn to call C functions from assembly language and to call assembly functions from C in addition to writing complete programs in assembly language. The gcc compiler is used internally to compile C programs.

The book starts early emphasizing using ebe to debug programs, along with teaching equivalent commands using gdb. Being able to single-step assembly programs is critical in learning assembly programming. Ebe makes this far easier than using gdb directly.

Highlights of the book include doing input/output programming using the Linux system calls and the C library, implementing data structures in assembly language and high performance assembly language programming.

Early chapters of the book rely on using the debugger to observe program behavior. After a chapter on functions, the user is prepared to use printf and scanf from the C library to perform I/O. The chapter on data structures covers singly linked lists, doubly linked circular lists, hash tables and binary trees. Test programs are presented for all these data structures. There is a chapter on optimization techniques and 3 chapters on specific optimizations. One chapter covers how to efficiently count the 1 bits in an array with the most efficient version using the recently-introduced popcnt instruction. Another chapter covers using SSE instructions to create an efficient implementation of the Sobel filtering algorithm. The final high performance programming chapter discusses computing correlation between data in 2 arrays. There is an AVX implementation which achieves 20.5 GFLOPs on a single core of a Core i7 CPU.

Decent introduction in less time

This book is not such a thick tome as many assembly books and allows a person wanting to learn assembly to do so in approximately ten weeks with 5 hours of study per week. I agree with the author that chapter 4 should just be skipped or read casually. Chapter 4 needs a lot more explanation or outside study to really get a handle on this memory topic. However, the rest of the book is good and gives a good introduction to 64 bit Assembly in Linux. Its emphasis is on science/engineering and optimization and not on device drivers or kernel writing.

*** When working through this book, be sure to also have the Intel manual with its alphabetic listing of assembly instructions on the screen also. It will be your main source for moving beyond basic assembly and is a good supplement from the beginning.

Assembly is so much nicer in 64 bit with all the extra registers, instructions, etc.

I have both the first and second edition. Some have said the ebe figures are hard to read in the 2nd edition, but they are easy to read in the copy I have.

The second addition adds additional exercises and explanation. It is worth getting it instead of the first edition. The hundreds of dollars asking price for the first edition is a ridiculous joke! Don't buy it, just get the second edition.

So far, this is the only book on 64bit Assembly Programming!

I do like the layout of this book. It has a couple of problems for the IDE it uses.
I would recommend both yasm and gold as the compiler and linker respectively. The author prefers ld even though it is not optimized for 64bit like gold is.
Currently, the author will respond to emails if you have problems or suggestions.
The book itself is well laid out and covers appropriate subjects in order. It is good for the beginner/intermediate as a learning tool and handy for the expert as a reference book for the 64bit commands/registers.

Brilliant introduction to assembly on 64 bit (x86-64)

I am through most of the book and am very happy I added it to my personal library. It is a very useful and effective introduction to assembly language - one which I would want to recommend as a mandatory text in the engineering syllabus. It goes through lot of details which make things quite clear - floating point representation in memory, different segments of the program, implementation of data structures like arrays, linked lists (structures), binary trees, hash tables and has a chapter relating to recent SSE and AVX instructions. Over all very happy on this purchase. So not a reference manual (~ 250 pages) but a book I'd really use and keep coming back.

About the Author
William M. Trochim (Ph.D., Northwestern University) is a Professor in the Department of Policy Analysis and Management at Cornell University and a Professor of Public Health in the Department of Healthcare Policy and Research at the Weill Cornell Medical College (WCMC). He is the Director of the Cornell Office for Research on Evaluation and Director of Evaluation for Extension and Outreach at Cornell, and the Director of Evaluation for the WCMC's Clinical and Translational Science Center. He has taught both undergraduate and graduate required courses in applied social research methods since joining the faculty at Cornell in 1980. Trochim's research interests include the theory and practice of research, conceptualization methods, strategic and operational planning methods, performance management and measurement, and change management. His current research is primarily in the areas of translational research, research-practice integration, evidence-based practice, and evaluation policy.

James P. Donnelly, SUNY-Buffalo Dr. Donnelly is an assistant professor in the Department of Counseling, School and Educational Psychology at the University at Buffalo. He completed his undergraduate degree at Allegheny College, his masters at Claremont Graduate University and his doctorate at the University at Buffalo. He teaches courses related to research methods and health psychology at the graduate level. Previously a psychologist at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, his research and clinical interests are in quality of life issues related to chronic and life limiting illness. He is also affiliated with the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care in Buffalo. He lives in Clarence, New York with his wife Kerry and sons Seamus and Paddy.

Beginner's book

This book is just okay. I disagree with other readers who have said that it's a complicated read. This book is very simplistic in nature- I was required to purchase it as an accompaniment to another book for a psychometrics course and the best use of this book is to read for the VERY basic of definitions and then bolster knowledge from elsewhere. It's an easy read, but at times too conversational in nature. The author makes jokes throughout the book, which is somewhat off putting when it comes at the price of sacrificing content. Id say that this book is best suited for someone just getting started in research- just know that you will need another book to really get at the meat that this one overlooks.

I used this book in grad school, and admired its accessible writing and easy-to-understand concepts. However, I keep having to order more copies! I lend it to colleagues, who like it so much they want to keep it, and so my organization has to keep ordering more. If that's not the sign of a good book, I don't know what is.

As you can imagine, the choices they make are often far from ideal, but their actions fit perfectly within the storyline.�The chapters alternate between each girl's points of view. I can see why the author chose this plot device, as the reader is able to see the women's parallel progression through the years.�This book deserves nothing less than�4 out of 4 stars�The author should be commended for shining a light on a sensitive topic by crafting an interesting, believable tale. I would recommend this book to anyone who appreciates good writing, particularly about a subject that is too often swept under the rug.�

He attended Plymouth High School where he was an honor student, and served as an active member of various clubs and organizations. Immediately after, he furthered his education at East Carolina University and in 2008, relocated to Raleigh, NC, where he began a professional career. In his free time, Andre enjoys spending time with family and close friends, traveling, reading, and writing.

Very well-written and heartfelt story

It's not often that such a serious subject as sexual abuse can be tackled in a fictional tale and be done with dignity and grace, while also entertaining the reader with a good story. This is exactly what author A.L. Smith accomplishes with her novel, "Behind Closed Doors". A story of three sisters, Sierra, Alex and Latrice, who suffered greatly while growing up at the hands of a family member. They go their separate ways, only to reunite and find a great resolution for all involved. A very engaging story that pulled at my heartstrings and definitely kept me turning pages. Looking forward to reading part two of this series. Well done.

Great revamp to Book 1! Kudos A.L. Smith!

Great read! I love how A.L. Smith revamped this story to incorporate one of the characters from book 2. I also love the updated ending of the book. This story line is real life as things like this gets swept under the rug and the victims suffer in silence because molestation by a family member goes ignored or the victim is blamed or called fast or loose. The molestation stopped at generation 4 due to one of the victims in this generation putting an end to it before her own child was affected. A.L. Smith kudos to you on the revamp! I enjoyed this book as good as the first version of this book....Keep on writing as you have a wonderful gift that keeps me turning the pages. Patiently waiting on Book 3 to see how this series continues...If I could give a 10 or more stars I would definitely do so. Great job by a wonderful author! Keep on writing as this is definitely your calling!

It's no fun when your life is turned inside out.

This was my first read by this author and I was awe struck at how talented she is and how raw and heart filled this story was. This story had me revisiting my own story and rooting for the ladies as they sought some kind of relief. This is truly a story that should be read by anyone who has suffered trauma or incest. Even if you haven't it is still a good story. Kudos, to a great author who is well on her way.

I stumbled on this book by accident, but couldn't quit reading it once I started. Full of suspense, this book was a great find.

Simple Yet Addicting

I'm not going to bother writing an in-depth review because I know that not many people will read this review. This book isn't exactly a hot seller.

But if you are into supernatural tales, I would highly recommend this series. The books are not long and they have a writing style that is aimed to appeal to a younger audience, yet the story is also quite dark and has undertones and subtext that older teens and adults could appreciate.

The books are fastpaced, interesting, and actually creepy. I read lots of adult horror novels and books but I still found this book series fascinating. The story pulled me in and I read each book in a matter of two or three days, and that was only because I forced myself to put the book down - every chapter ends with something that makes you want to keep reading.

While reading these books, I am able to perfectly imagine everything that happens as though I'm actually seeing it. The characters are interesting and you care about what happens to them, which makes you feel more into the story when something bad may happen to them. And the stories are able to be creepy because you don't really know what's happening, you don't know who the villain is. The atmosphere is just very well constructed.

So basically, I'd HIGHLY recommend this if you're looking for a fast read and you like suspense/horror. If you have negative feelings about the story based on other reviews here and the plot, then don't read it. If you think it's gonna be bad, it probably will be. But I bought it without knowing a THING about it and now this series is one of my favorites. I enjoyed this more than any Stephen King novel, but hey, maybe that's just me.

This has to be Richie's best work.

Lucy's mother has just died forcing her to live with her closest relatives. her aunt irene and cousin Angela.

Lucy was told that nothing bad ever happens in her new little town called pine ridge. But that wasn't true. One night a strange power was passed onto Lucy after falling into an open grave. She started having visions, little pictures of terrifying events flooded her head sometimes making her sick. Things have started to get dangerous, someone's watching and there ready to make there move.

I did a book report on this book after reading the whole series and I had to write a paragraph that would draw the reader in and make them interested.

this book is the best i have ever read

Richie has inspired me to write and someday i want to be an author and write these kinds of stories.

and hopfully i will have my first book out by the time i am 14 = P

I love Richie and this book please read it!

Poor book for business improvement people

This book is poorly written and not worth the money. The sections are put together poorly and a lot of the material is extremely outdated for modern applications.

You'll be left wanting more. The information about how the equations were derived is missing. The examples are lacking substance and are insufficient in application and number. The list is endless.

It's unfortunate my professor required this book for our class. The examples and solutions often contain errors so it is hard to tell when you are right or wrong. The book lacks flow. The book spends too much time on elementary topics and rarely discusses advanced ideas. The review problems lack substance.
