About the Author
Roxy Peck is Emerita Associate Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics and Professor of Statistics Emerita at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. A faculty member at Cal Poly from 1979 until 2009, Roxy served for six years as Chair of the Statistics Department before becoming Associate Dean, a position she held for 13 years. She received an M.S. in Mathematics and a Ph.D. in Applied Statistics from the University of California, Riverside. Roxy is nationally known in the area of statistics education, and she was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award in Statistics Education at the U.S. Conference on Teaching Statistics in 2009. In 2003 she received the American Statistical Association's Founder's Award, recognizing her contributions to K-12 and undergraduate statistics education. She is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and an elected member of the International Statistics Institute. Roxy served for five years as the Chief Reader for the Advanced Placement Statistics Exam and has chaired the American Statistical Association's Joint Committee with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics on Curriculum in Statistics and Probability for Grades K-12 and the Section on Statistics Education. In addition to her texts in introductory statistics, Roxy is also co-editor of "Statistical Case Studies: A Collaboration Between Academe and Industry" and a member of the editorial board for "Statistics: A Guide to the Unknown, 4th Edition." Outside the classroom, Roxy likes to travel and spends her spare time reading mystery novels. She also collects Navajo rugs and heads to Arizona and New Mexico whenever she can find the time.

Excellent!

I drew on the probability chapter a great deal in my introductory master's level course on biostatistics for public health students (I had gotten a preprent of this chapter at the Joint Statistical Meetings). Dr. Peck has a real gift for making concepts clear, and I am quite eager to see the full text!

Works well.

Nice book with an appealing layout that once you get used to it is very user friendly. Could really do with a glossary. I am very disappointed that it doesn't have one. The examples are mostly good but some of the later ones like in chap. 10.3 are really confusing and not at all user friendly. The answer key is sometimes incomprehensible when trying to use it to reverse engineer a problem. Again this is more true with the later sections of the book.

There Is No Method for Perfect Pitch

I was really, really excited to get this book. I'm a guitarist with a master's degree in jazz and ear training has always been a huge part of my musicianship. I teach it at the college course level and always profess its importance to the well rounded musician. With perfect pitch being the natural phenomenon that it is, I was really interested in how the author was going to approach teaching it...and that ended up being the catch right there: having perfect pitch is referred to as a natural phenomenon for a reason...it exists naturally. You CANNOT teach perfect pitch. You CANNOT learn perfect pitch. However, you CAN learn relative pitch, and that's exactly what this book is aimed to help with. The author seems to be a guy who knows his stuff, and oddly enough, he very accurately explains the difference between relative and perfect pitch...then goes on to claim that his method will help you learn how to posses perfect pitch.

Unfortunately, the method used here is just really poor. To start, you're asked to listen to several audio tracks, each being a piano playing a single note over and over again several times. You're supposed to "digest" the note and describe its sound with a list of adjectives...and then do the same thing for every single other note. So the reader is expected to be able to listen to a note and hear qualities in it to the extent that they're able to distinguish it from any other note...when I went through the book and realized that this was the foundation of the author's method to obtain perfect pitch, I was so upset. Think about this...let's say you hear somebody sing a C natural and you describe it by saying something like "that note is round, hollow sounding, etc, etc, etc,"...then you hear that person sing a C#...are you going to hear a completely different set of qualities to describe it and distinguish it from the C natural? And then hear a different set of qualities for each of the remaining 10 notes? And then be able to instantly recall those same exact qualities for a given note every single time you heard it? Of course not! I love advanced ear training techniques as much as anybody, but aside from those gifted with perfect pitch, I just do not believe that readers will be able to distinguish one note from any other note by recalling a verbal description. And even so, if this were to somehow work, it isn't perfect pitch...it would be a form of relative pitch - you're naming the note based on having practiced how to relate it to certain qualities.

Bottom line: Perfect pitch cannot be taught through any kind of method, and this book is no exception. However, it does teach certain aspects of relative pitch and it has some good listening exercises. It covers how to hear and identify the 12 chromatic simple intervals, which is an essential skill for musicians. I would absolutely not recommend this book to advanced musicians with previous ear training experience.

If you really want to develope a great ear, this course is not for you.

No included instructions or dialog on the CD's, just tones played, I was really disappointed. I don't believe you should need a book with the answers for reference, you should be able to listen for the answers on the included CD's. The ear learns from listening, not reading. If you are serious about ear training I would purchase The Perfect Pitch Ear Training SuperCourse by David Lucas Burge. This ear training course consists of clear verbal instruction with musical examples that open the ear naturally. I am a serious musician that has chosen to expand my understanding of music and improve my ear, so I do not recommend the Hal Leonard Perfect Pitch Method.

Great illustrated guide for older children

Not only a great childrens book but also one of the best books written by grandmaster Raymond Keene (who has written more than 100). He seems to have picked the eyes out of the best of his previous works and summarised them in an easy to understand guide that appeals to kids and adult beginners.

As the other reviewer says its many many illustrations are terrific and designed to catch the eye encouraging kids (and adults)to read on. Almost every page has at least one picture or chess board shot.

It starts with an interesting history of the game and ends with biographies of world champions, discussion of computer chess and resources for further learning about chess. In between it covers the basics of pieces and how they move, and has quite comprehensive sectiions on openings, the middlegame, and endgame/checkmates.

It goes into detail that is a welcome surprise for a childrens guide. For example he covers the "more difficult" checkmate by knight and bishop briefly in an easy to understand illustrated way when adult books on checkmate endings written by so called experts avoid discussing at all! So Ray Keene really know what he is talking about and explains it simply and well.

As well as the many illustrations, there are plenty of summary boxes, and quizzes with answers at each step of the book. There are also several complete classic games which are used to explain key concepts. This makes learning easy and it proceeds in simple steps from basic to progressively more complex concepts.

The edition I have is from the 1980s which you might think makes it out of date. But for a beginner to intermediate it is still one of the best books to learn from particularly for children. I rate this as a classic childrens chess book which will be hard to equal. (A worthy and up to date competitor is the Usborne Complete Internet Chess Book (see my review)). This book by Ray Keene is more suitable for older children as it is more wordy and goes into more detail for more difficult concepts (eg the bishop and knight checkmate mentioned above)

In short a great book. You may need to buy it second hand or search the net for a copy as it may not be readily available. But it will be well worth the effort to get it and enjoy every page.

Overall a great read and very helpful to a beginner

Well written, well photographed. I'm a beginning woodworker and didn't have anything but the most basic knowledge (i.e. "That's made of wood alright") when I picked up this book. The first few pages were efficient at teaching me how woods are different and explained why wood does what it does. The following chapters led me to a basic understanding of woodworking tools and what they do, how they work etc. Then there were the practical projects in the latter half of the book. I don't have all the tools required to do most of them (including a plainer, or that special saw they use to cut the dovetail joints) but hopefully I'll be able to get them soon to complete the projects the book suggests.

Excellent guide for starting on the "craftsmanship" of woodworking

I'm fairly new to woodworking. What I really enjoyed about this book, is the multiple options presented when performing a task. For example, you may not have certain power tools available to you. So when you need to make a mortise, you can use handtools, or a drillpress, or just a drill. You are able to get through the entire book with relatively inexpensive handtools. This allows you to choose what level of power tools you want to use based on your preference and your budget/space available.

The 2 projects: A simple bench and cabinet, can be easily tweaked to match dimensions you're looking for. They cover woodworking without using nails or screws, which means creating connections between wood using various joining techniques. If you'd rather put boards together with screws and such (which don't hold up as well in the long-run) or if you're looking to perform house construction, then this isn't your book. This book focuses on the the craft of woodworking, which means taking your time to join and sculpt wood to make your project.

Perfect introduction, very enjoyable read

First I need to point out that I am an armchair woodworker, unfortunately I have not had the pleasure (yet) to do the various exercises/projects. This was my first woodworking book.

The author has a vast experience not only in woodworking, but also, and perhaps more importantly at this level, in *teaching* woodworking. He can explain the various concepts and techniques very eloquently, precisely and concisely. The descriptions are so accurate that it feels like you are actually seeing it done - no, doing it yourself, even though you are (like I was) sitting in a train. The pictures are also excellent, and the balance between text, pictures, drawings and sidebars denotes first-class editing.
From a macro level, the book is also carefully structured. The first part describes the properties of wood and how they affect woodworking. Then machines are explained one by one, followed by hand tools (I would have done it the other way around, but never mind). After that, the student is taken through a number of basic exercises, in many cases giving various choices of hand tools and machines. Finally, there are a couple of projects.

Be warned, reading the book takes some effort on your side. Especially if you are unfamiliar with technical terms, which are always introduced before they are used in context, you will have to look them up again in the index, which is by the way complete and functional. The author's writing is packed with information (which is good), and he is explaining difficult operations so you sometimes have to read the same paragraph twice to understand how to do things properly. When later projects build on previously-learnt material, the reader is referred to the specific page instead of repeating the explanation.

Five stars, well deserved.

This is the ultimate novel of college life during the first hallucinatory flowering of what has famously come to be known as The Sixties. Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up to Me follows haunted ur-hippy Gnossos Pappadopoulis upon return to his old university town that's just tilting into a new era, and Gnossos' involvement in a swirl of sixties-style drug taking and the search for love and the meaning of it all. It is a hilarious and haunting book.

About the Author
Richard Fari�a was killed in a motorcycle accident in Carmel, California, on April 30, 1966-two days after the publication of Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up to Me. A posthumous collection of his writings, Long Time Coming and a Long Time Gone, was published in 1969.

Thomas Pynchon was born in Glen Cove, New York, in 1937. He is the author of The Crying of Lot 49, V., Vineland, Slow Learner, and Mason & Dixon, among other novels.

We Don't Like It When Someone Breaks the Rules

I was compelled to read this book. I had just read David Hajdu's wonderful biographical book, *Positively 4th Street: The Lives and Times of Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Mimi Baez Farina, and Richard Farina*, a book that I highly recommend to readers generally interested in Dylan and Baez and the cultural phenomenon of the 60s zeitgeist, or to readers wanting to know more about the U.S.'s fascination with folk music during the late 50s and early 60s.

I'll get to Farina's book in a second, but first I want to say something about Richard Farina. Hajdu's seductive account of Farina--his manic ambitions, peripatetic wanderings, multiple artistic talents, brilliant conversations, spontaneous insights, Lothario lifestyle, and con-artist bravado--compelled me to read Farina's one and only book just to see what he produced as a writer. Similarly, I was compelled to find Farina's two recordings for Vanguard Records (he made two very hip folk records with his wife Mimi Baez).

Farina was a character. He used others callously to gain opportunities for himself. In that respect, he was a lot like Dylan, and other successful artists, letting his self-centered ambitions guide his actions, regardless of how they affected others. Using others as stepping stones, he furthered his career, first as a writer and then as a singer/songwriter and musician, and then again as a writer. Having learned from Hajdu's book about Farina's talent for self-advancement, I was not surprised while reading Farina's novel to see he is uninterested in following established conventions of novel writing for his time. He had his own style. His writing has been called self-absorbed or solipsistic, and those criticisms are true. An example of Farina's self-absorbtion is that he is hardly interested in providing readers with the usual or conventional cues to orient the reader to the setting, plot, and point of view (the point of view exasperatingly alternates from first person to third person at the whim of the author); moreover, he provides no clear hierarchy of characters (e.g. major and minor characters).

Indeed, there is only one major character in *Been Down...* and he is Gnossos, whose life is oddly similar to Farina's: travling out West, to Cuba, Ireland, New York, and in the South; racking up numerous sexual conquests, experimenting with esoteric drugs and living the high life; manically seeking new experiences; in short, doing everything that supposedly defined coming of age in the U.S. during the sixties.

Readers rightly complain that the book is self-indulgent. Self-indulgence and narcissism were obvious guideposts in Farina's own life: he was ambitious and did not follow the rules. It fascinates me that his self-indulgence is manifested in his writing, which is experimental, self-pleasing, self-affirming, and self-interested.

Another reason this book, written between 1959 and 1965, is worth reading is that it presaged the coming Gonzo style of writing, later practiced to great effect by Hunter Thompson, Tom Wolfe, and a few others. The sixties bent the rules for what was allowable, indeed possible, in popular and artful writing, and Farina was riding that experimental wave long before others who eventually got the credit for "inventing" Gonzo style. If Farina hadn't died suddenly and at such a young age, he would probably be esteemed among the writers I mention above, as well as Norman Mailer, George Plimpton, Truman Capote, and a host of journalists like Lester Bangs and P. J. O'Rourke, all of whom experimented with Gonzo style or New Journalism, an offshoot of the Gonzo style of writing.

So, it seems to me, the value in reading this book is to understand how literary tides were changing in the Sixties. This book is a prime illustration of how those turbulent waters and winds of change altered the shores of contemporary literature. Although Gonzo "literature" never really amounted to a viable "school" of writing, elements of it are now evident in mainstream writing; for example, the birth of creative non-fiction as a genre of writing owes something to Gonzo "literature." Moreover, the Gonzo style opened the door for much more personal experimentation in writing, and Farina, as I said, was at the forefront. Farina may not have been interested in leading the Gonzo fight as Thompson did a couple years later ("Gonzo" was not even a word at the time of Farina's death), but he had tapped into a new experimental style of expression, and I like to speculate that he would have become every bit the artist and changeling that Dylan has become. Hajdu's biography of Farina et al. tacitly concludes that Farina in 1966, at 28 years of age, was already a remarkable, multi-talented, and accomplished artist whose potential was cut short by accidental death, just as he was coming into his own.

In my opinion, there is one other characteristic of Farina's first and only novel that makes it a worthy read: it has a remarkable similarity to Thomas Pynchon's first novel, *V*. Everything that I've said above about Farina's book equally describes Pynchon's first novel, too. Both writers were buddies at Cornell and read each other's stories as undergraduates. They were both autodidacts and injected their first novels with passing bits of arcana from countless esoteric subjects, from nuclear fission to Rennaisance art. Curiously, one song on Farina's first album of folk music, *Celebrations for a Grey Day*, is titled "V" and is a tribute to Pynchon's novel. I think it's fair to say that, even though Pynchon's novel was published in 1963 before Farina's novel, the writers were equally influenced by one another at that early stage in their careers.

So, I have given a number of good reasons to read Farina's book. But aside from these reasons, the question remains: Is Farina's novel a monumental work? Reading the rest of the reviews here in Amazon, I have to conclude Farina's novel annoys as many readers as it pleases. *Been Down...* probably will never be considered a great American novel, maybe not even a minor classic, but its sales will remain steady as long as readers are interested in socio-cultural history of the U.S. during the sixties; and the literature and music of that period will be appreciated for what it tells us about those times and its people. While it is true that Farina's book deviates significantly from conventional standards of good literature, that deviation is exactly why it is worth reading: it is an exemplary novel of artistic experimentation at a critical period of change in U.S. culture.

Okay, so it's got an introduction by Thomas Pynchon and it brings back a lot of memories for people-who-were-young-during-the-Sixties, but what about those of us who were "unlucky" enough to be born after that halcyon decade crashed and burned? Is the book really any good? Yes. Farina was, for my money, one of the best writers of his generation, even though one novel and an out-of-print (but, if you can find it, surprisingly good) collection of short pieces isn't much to go on. Although the book is actually set around the turn of the decade, 59-61 or so, there's an eerie impression that it was written twenty years later. For all the drink, drugs and college high-jinks, Death, War and that other lost horseman of the apocalypse, Responsibility, are never far away. The main character, Gnossos Pappadopolis, is a rucksack-wearin' hipster who attempts to maintain his Cool in an atmosphere of student demos and faculty corruption. Farina makes no attempt to sanctify Gnossos, and nor would we want him to, yet we end up sympathising with him. Pynchon's famous jacket quote says that the book comes like "the Hallelujah Chorus being played by 200 kazzo players with perfect pitch" - make that Barber's Adagio being played by a jug band and you're about right.

Farina's Timeless Classic: A Reflection in a Crystal Dream

Richard Farina was a consummate songerwriter, poet and hopeful novelist, until his first and only novel burst onto the scene. Although a later book was released that was a compilation of some short stories, poems, and articles about him, this was the only book he had to stretch toward the literary heavens with. And it was indeed a smash!
Unfortunately, Farina, who was married to Joan Baez' younger sister Mimi, with whom he had forged a folk duo that played and recorded some of his wonderful poetry put to music, never lived to experience his own wild success, as he fell off the back of a motorcycle on the way home from the publication party for this book, and was killed instantly. But the book lives, indeed it flourishes, and the paperback version has never been out of print in all this time, which is ample testimony to its continuing power, verve, and its timeless message, as well as to its beautifully written story.
This is a wonderful book, one that has grown in reputation and stature over the intervening decades, and as another, much younger reviewer commented, it is one for everyone, not just for us greying babyboomers who were lucky enough to have discovered and experienced Richard in his prime. For all of us who have read his work, or listened to his music, or experienced his poetry, or for those of us who were lucky enough to see Mimi and Richard perform at the Newport Folk Festival, one can still hear the faint echoes of their haunting guitar harmonies and vocals, and we truly know that he is still with us. We know that he has truly left us a present, his evocative "reflections in a crystal dream".
Although set in a time before the changes of the sixties started to roar, one soon recognizes teh signs and spirit of the times in his words and the storyline. Enter Gnossos, soul of the road, keeper of the eternal flame, and a pilgrim on an endless search for the holy grail of cool, and the college town of Athene (read Ithaca, NY, home of Cornell) will never be the same. Nor will you after digesting this wild, extremely readable parable. So, friend, don't hesitate; buy it, read it, but do so slllllloooooowwwwwllllly, savoring every gorgeous moment of it. It's all we have left of him, the only legacy of an incredible talent and a wonderful spokesperson for the otherwise indescribable sixties.
