This book helped save me $$$ on insect repellent for my puppies :-D Yeah!!
By Hamrick
This book was very clear and concise, and the recipes I have used, have worked very well. I am an avid essential oil user, so I already had most of the oils I needed for these recipes at home (there were a few odd ones that I bought just for this {like catnip} but it still ends up cheaper than buying a finished product retail). There are a few additional items required that the average person may or may not have laying around ( ie castle soap, I use Dr Bronners so I already had some. Amazon has lots of Dr Bronners soaps, this is the kind I used :
https://www.amazon.com/Dr-Bronners-Organic-Castile-Liquid/dp/B00014G4H8/ref=sr_1_3_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1466622042&sr=8-3&keywords=dr+bronners+eucalyptus
Non scented high proof alcohol like vodka, I ended up using everclear. And vegetable glycerin. This one I did not have, since there is nothing else I would use it for, but picked up a bottle at Wal-Mart pretty cheap).
Since I am already very familiar with a vast quantity of essential oils, when it came to the specific oil amounts and type, I just used her recipes as a guideline (there are some of the oils she uses that I HATE the scent of {geranium} ) and I would add or omit the oils till I achieved a scent I found pleasant. One oil that I don't think the author addressed enough was Lemon Eucalyptus. And I don't mean lemon oil mixed with eucalyptus oil. I mean oil from a type of eucalyptus plant that is called a Lemon Eucalyptus. This is one of only a few essential oils that has been recognized and proven by the C.D.C. to be effective as an insect repellent. Thus I think it should be used in ALL homemade bug repellents; spray, lotion, salve or otherwise (the only exceptions of when this oil should not be used is in the case of an allergy to the lemon eucalyptus, or on children under the age of three). You can buy the lemon eucalyptus here on Amazon, I did. I personally tried these brands and found them a good quality and reasonably priced:
https://www.amazon.com/Lemon-Eucalyptus-Therapeutic-Grade-Essential/dp/B00PHQB8EE/ref=sr_1_3_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1466621477&sr=8-3&keywords=Lemon+eucalyptus+oil
And
https://www.amazon.com/Eucalyptus-Therapeutic-Essential-Edens-Garden-/dp/B002RTVKOC/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1466621838&sr=8-1&keywords=Lemon+eucalyptus+edens+garden
But for the rest of the recipe, I followed the books recommendation to a T, and the end result was amazing! I ended up with a light weight spray that smelled pleasant, had a nice staying power (I'd recommend reapplying the spray every couple of hours for maxium coverage. Although I could still smell hints of the spray even the next day, so covearge might last as long as 24 hours) and was very effective at keeping all the little annoying cridders at bay. I even spray down myself with this stuff before taking the dogs out and even at dusk, not a single bite!
I really loved the fact that the author would take the same recipe (as in oils and intended purpose) and show you several different ways to make the repellent. An example would be formula #1 is oil based, formula #2 is alcohol and water based. This gives great flexibility to the reader in the type of end product they would want, and also to help accommodate what they already have at home, which again, can help save some money.
The only thing I didn't really like about this book was the recipes seemed very redundant when it came to the oils recommend in the recipes. But this wasn't much of an issue for me, since I was already tweaking the oils to my liking anyways.
I would recommend this book to anyone that is looking for a "how to" in homemade insect repellent, be it for themselves, children, or pets

This book has lots of great recipes for homemade bud solutions. I am trying to convert from chemicals to more natural products for myself and my dogs so I find this book very useful in making that transition.
