Recap: A diabolical, master manipulator and his weak underlings.

This story was an okay read, for me. I felt Codie's character was immature, gullible and weak. I was hoping that would change, at some point. I was hoping that she would figure out that since Scott couldn't afford for his wife to find out about his baby and he had never legally acknowledged paternity; Codie actually held all the power. Why would she move into a house and accept a car; without insisting they both be in her name? That's just dumb. And why wouldn't she use the opportunity of being his paid mistress, to at least continue her education or take vocational training? Short-sighted, to say the least. And how does her 2-yo disappear from the home and she "assumes", his father must have snuck in and snatched him. No real mother would sit around and gamble on their child's safety like that. They would call the police, because their toddler has just been abducted from their home! Just craziness.
And the Hugo storyline is pathetic. He's arrested for hitting Scott; when Scott had initiated the physical altercation by slapping and pushing him. Codie was a witness to the altercation. Why would police only arrest Hugo? Unrealistic.

I really don't know where to begin with this story. It was truly one of the most frustrating books I have ever read! Basically Codie the main female character is a "side chick" who falls in love with Scott a married man and believes he's going to leave his wife for her. Well surprise side chick gets pregnant & Scott wants her to "get rid of it". When she doesn't he leaves her. So fast forward 2yrs & although she's still in love with this jerk she moves on, lands a job and starts showing interest in another man named Hugo. Well cutting story short Scott comes back into her life & the story nosedives from there. Codie starts acting like a complete idiot, Scott tells her he bought a house & car for her and is divorcing his wife. He also turned Codie against Hugo which really didn't take much doing. Now not only did Codie not ask for some kind of proof of Scott's divorce, this dummy quits her job and moves into the house Scott bought but is not living there himself! Then when the situation once again blows up in her face, she starts "looking" for a way out of the relationship but doesn't want to move out of HIS house and wants to wait until she finds a job. Ok if a man that told me to first get rid of my kid, then leaves my life for 2yrs, comes back blackmails me the last thing I'm going to do is stay in his house!! I got so frustrated with this book I just skipped pages. Anyway Codie is an idiot who somehow is written to be a victim but is really a side chick borderline gold digger, Scott just a true jerk, Hugh a firefighter pushover. Really the only tolerable character was Alba the sister, Will the little boy, and Madeline the wife.

I really loved the story

I really loved the story. Scott was a manipulative jerk and should have been kicked to the curb when they became pregnant and insisted that she have an abortion say he would go with her and then not show up. The hurt she endured. There is not that much love in the world for a low life like that. Unfortunately Codie thought she loved him and he took her through too many changes for me but she had to learn about him for herself. Thank goodness for her sister Alba and her neighbor and friend Shantay. Along comes a decent guy who is a fireman and he falls in love with her and her son Will. She almost lost him because Scott was brain washing her and she fell for his bullsh.... The story started off as a typical love affair with a married man who promises to divorce his wife and marry her.....sure!!!!!! but the plot thickens and turns out to be a really good read.

A book-length study of Aldous Huxley’s political philosophy has long been a desideratum in Huxley criticism: Alessandro Maurini fills this gap with a perceptive analysis of Huxley’s development as a political thinker, from his radical scepticism of any ideologies (including democracy) � la Vilfredo Pareto via his pacifism of the mid-1930s to his later warnings against the misuse of science and technology at the hands of dictators and oligarchies, in conjunction with his plea for a kind of ecological communitarianism towards the end of his career: this is, all in all, a stimulating book with many good insights and even new findings, such as Maurini’s concluding rediscovery of the dissentious debate between Huxley and the Italian philosopher Giuseppe Prezzolini in 1958 about the future of mankind. I didn't even know how to turn it off. The information that comes with the ipod is very limited. This user's guide was invaluable to really enjoy the device. I wish there had been more information about bluetooth,however.

I have three aims for this book. The first goal is to teach you the vocabulary and grammar of predicate logic so that you will be able to translate the sentences of English (or other natural languages) into the notation of this important branch of symbolic logic. The second goal concerns three techniques for evaluating predicate arguments: formal proofs, counterexamples, and truth trees. I aim to help you become proficient in employing these logical methods. The third goal of the book is to develop your ability to identify and assess those predicate arguments you encounter daily as you read books and newspapers, carry on conversations, and watch television. Most of the examples and exercises in the text involve arguments of this everyday variety.

I enjoyed writing the book. If you enjoy studying it (as I hope you will), I think my goals will be achieved.

This text presupposes familiarity with propositional logic and, in particular, acquaintance with the natural-deduction approach to formal proofs and the technique of two-sided truth trees. Appendix One contains a review of this material, but it is too compact to be fully intelligible to the complete novice. A discussion of these techniques is provided in the companion volume, Introduction to Logic: Propositional Logic, revised third edition.

Predicate logic is developed gradually in this book, starting with the simplest monadic symbolizations and proceeding through multiple quantification to the logic of relations. Students learn to symbolize and evaluate arguments of a given degree of complexity before addressing the symbolization of more complex problems.

The formal-proof. system presented here does not include a universal-quantifier introduction rule. The advantages of this approach are that the quantifier rules can be stated more simply and that proofs (although often longer) are often easier to devise. A universal-quantifier introduction rule is provided in a footnote at the start of section 4.2 to accommodate students of teachers who prefer to include this rule.

Most of the examples and exercises center around arguments similar to those encountered by students. The majority of these arguments are natural, rather than contrived; many are presented by direct quotation from newspapers and other sources. My purposes in employing natural everyday arguments are (1) to evoke the reader's interest, (2) to counter the common but mistaken view that formal logic is just an impractical academic diversion, and (3) to improve students' capacity to notice and assess the arguments they encounter. The final chapter explicitly addresses the problems that arise when predicate logic is applied to natural arguments.

The second edition has been extensively revised. It differs from the first edition mainly in these ways:

* The book has been reorganized to allow students to develop symbolization and proof-construction skills even more gradually.
* There is a chapter on two-sided truth trees. Some instructors prefer to teach one-sided trees; a chapter explaining that technique is included on the CD-ROM disk packaged with the book.
* New sections treat possible-world counterexamples, intensional contexts, quantifier scope, and quantifier order.
* There are more exercises, and most of the original exercises and examples have been replaced by better and more current ones.
* The book is accompanied by a tutorial program, "PredLogic," written by Mark Pospesel and me. This Windows-based software provides an environment in which students symbolize sentences, construct proofs of validity, devise counterexamples, and create truth trees. The program enables students to catch errors as they are made, and it offers hints for solving problems.
* William G. Lycan has provided an appendix on the metatheory of predicate logic.
* This edition uses parenthesis-free quantifier symbols. These symbols have become standard since the first edition was published, and they are more suitable for doing logic on a computer. Gender-neutral language is used throughout. The chapter on logic diagrams (that appeared in the first edition) has been moved to the CD-ROM disk that accompanies the book.

not a book for the uninitiated

A fun and creative book in which De Duve uses Marx’s theory of value and production as a paradigm, or I’d even say, as a matrix in which to place and thus be able to discuss the four, very different, artists in the title. The book was commissioned as a monograph for a gallery show featuring Beuys, Warhol, Kline and Duchamp; but due to de Duve’s (negative) opinion of Kline’s work at the time, the monograph was rejected, and years later released as this book.

I only gave it 3 stars because as much as I had fun reading it, this is not a book for people who don’t know the work of these artists or something of Marx, for that matter.

Digital Ground is an architect's response to the design challenge posed by pervasive computing. One century into the electronic age, people have become accustomed to interacting indirectly, mediated through networks. But now as digital technology becomes invisibly embedded in everyday things, even more activities become mediated, and networks extend rather than replace architecture. The young field of interaction design reflects not only how people deal with machine interfaces but also how people deal with each other in situations where interactivity has become ambient. It shifts previously utilitarian digital design concerns to a cultural level, adding notions of premise, appropriateness, and appreciation.

Malcolm McCullough offers an account of the intersections of architecture and interaction design, arguing that the ubiquitous technology does not obviate the human need for place. His concept of "digital ground" expresses an alternative to anytime-anyplace sameness in computing; he shows that context not only shapes usability but ideally becomes the subject matter of interaction design and that "environmental knowing" is a process that technology may serve and not erode.

Drawing on arguments from architecture, psychology, software engineering, and geography, writing for practicing interaction designers, pervasive computing researchers, architects, and the general reader on digital culture, McCullough gives us a theory of place for interaction design. Part I, "Expectations," explores our technological predispositions -- many of which ("situated interactions") arise from our embodiment in architectural settings. Part III, "Practices," argues for design as a liberal art, seeing interactivity as a cultural -- not only technological -- challenge and a practical notion of place as essential. New perspectives!

The book digital ground presents new ideas about place and technology. I was particularly struck by the idea of technologies piling up at a place -an interesting problem is how this pile of technologies can be organized into a useful whole - device ecologies, and an extensible system (hardware and software) that can grow over time (and be subject to changes, e.g. devices removed, replaced, added,etc). Another interesting idea is how certain places fulfill or serve different aspects of life or functions, and the technology at a place should then be in accordance with the corresponding aspects of life or functions at that place, or at least be attuned to or be aware of context necessary for such functions and related activities. There are also other interesting ideas and underlying theories in the book which makes it an interesting read, and not only for architects and builders but computer scientists!

The future of interaction design

This book is a wonderful look at the background and future of interaction design. McCullough provides wonderful depth of understanding for the reader on the many discipline that support interaction design: psychology, architecture, cultural anthropology, technology. Not only does McCullough draw the disciplines together nicely, it is done seamlessly to the reader.

My copy is now filled with highlighter marks and it a book I will be returning to for my profession and through time. If you are a fan of well developed end notes to find further information, this book is a charm.

Looking Forward With Feet Firmly Planted.

Malcom McCullough might be one of the wisest voices I've come across in my reading of late. His exploration of the intersection of ubiquitous computing and architecture in Digital Ground is rigorous in its details but thorough in its scope. He not only does the specific topic justice but by the end he synthesizes issues of philosophy, computation, and architecture into the most cognizant argument for sustainability I've heard to date. In general he shows how pervasive computing is not just "new" but how it throws into relief very old ideas that formed our current economic culture. In discussing contextual or situated computing, he doesn't simply provide techno-fetishistic conjecture, he dives deep into what place is, the topology of places we know and will continue to know, the qualities of a place as an assemblage of value, and how value itself is determined. While only pieces of Digital Ground bare particular relevance to my personal research his ideas have led me to invaluable lines of inquiry. I can't imagine it doing anything less for you. Reading this book is time-well-spent.

Seeing the Redemptive Story

I was pleased to receive in the mail this wonderful Liturgical Guide from Parclete Press by Gavin Long. The look of the book is very appealing with its imitation leather cover and beautiful cross imprint on the front. To be honest, I was a little curious about what I might find in this liturgical guide. I knew from study that every church whether high or low church in worship has a liturgy. I was pleased to note in the introduction Long expresses part of his goal in saying, "Celebrating the redemptive story in our homes requiresa balance of creativity and catholicity" (8). In describing the creativity and catholicity of practicing liturgy at home, Long is speaking of the continuing conversation we have with God and with others, including their expressions of worship and gifts. The goal is not to narrow the focus to a select few but to create an environment where people are able to bring their lives before Christ. I do also really appreciate Long's insistence that it is the redemptive story that should shape our liturgy. Throughout this book, I was saying to myself, 'Yes, that's it,' as I saw how he combined the Old Testament and the New to bring the unity of the message of Christ.

What else did I think was very good in this liturgical guide? Theologically, Long was careful to tell the redemptive story highlighting the Trinitarian foundation of salvation. In the Opening of Sabbath for Advent, Long yses children's responses to highlight that the coming of Jesus was part of God's plan and done by the power of the Holy Spirit. We get a grand sense of the filial love and connectedness that each person of the Trinity has for another and this in turn leads us to worship. Secondly, I think Long did a great job at mentioning some key aspects of Christology that sometimes go unmentioned. He says on the same page through the leader's words, "This Advent season, we anticipate the birth of the King, Jesus Christ, the Savior of the World and the fulfillment of all of God's promises" (18). Seeing Jesus as King brings us to a sense of awe and wonder as we serve him as obedient subjects or servants. Through the incarnation, death, resurrection, asencsion, Jesus is exalted as King over all creation and redefines what it means to be king here on earth as well.

I also thought that the prayers of the week were very appropriate for the liturgy of the week and were drawn from both ancient and modern voices of the church. I really appreciated the prayers from the Orthodox church, both Russian and Eastern. These prayers highlighted some aspects of the ministry and life of Jesus that I don't usually meditate upon. Overall, I thought that the liturgical guide was both very practical for adults and children and brings out a sense of the holiness and nearness of God. Lastly, I think that this guide helps us practically retell the story of the Bible, from Creation to Consummation in a way that helps us remember and store in our hearts the message of redemption and renewal that is not to be missed. We have too long read the same passages in the same way without taking the stories and message to heart in the context of a worshipping community.

On a more practical note, I was glad to see that Long decided to include prayers that were both long and short, centered on the biblical story and our story. Sometimes liturgy can move into rote receciation that has no room for creativity, and I think Long did a good job at aiming to stay in line with the biblical story while being creative in his approach. For all that was said prior, the biggest part of this liturgical guide for me was that it allowed me and my family to worship God in a more intimate way, realizing that we need God just as much for the rain for our crops as we do as our Savior.

I am so happy, as an evangelical Christian, to have a resource like this. The book gives me SO much information about our Christian heritage that, for so long, was known only to the Jewish people and scholars.
