Do not purchase this book if you want to learn about the philosophy of race

"The Philosophy of Race" by Albert Atkin fails to adhere to its back cover's promise of presenting the discourse on race in a balanced manner. The sole reference to proponents of the biological legitimacy of race (which is evinced by volumes of genetic, morphological, and psychological data, as the latest relevant reviews will attest to) is a passing remark about "The Bell Curve", though its thesis is weakly challenged by Atkin. If you want to understand the perspective of race from the view of those with white guilt and a fidelity to multiculturalism and integration, this is your book; if you want a look at more than one side of the philosophy of race, this book does a horrible job; it contributes just about nothing new to the discussion, solely regurgitating feel-good, faltering sociological theories.

Great artwork, good stories

The artwork is great and many of the stories I have seen in the films. Usually at the beginning of the story there are a few pages in color, but the rest is in black and white. The stories are interesting and I have had trouble putting it down. There are explanations on the pages as to what is what sometimes, plus there is a great amount of info in the back pages. Some of the words are too small for me to read and I have had to use a magnifying glass. Sometimes I get a bit confused as I am not sure in which order I should read some of the frames. It has been a long time since I read a Comic Book(graphic novel/manga) that I am thoroughly enjoying reading this one, especially since Ghost in The Shell is one of my Favorite Series/films. I thought the price was bit high, but at 350 pages it is a good value.

How Human are you?

Ghost in the Shell depicts a world very likely to come true. A world where the line between man and machine has become blurry and machines become human while men can be programed. A world of robots, cyborgs, super tech, violence and the same greed, ambition and folly of always. The story is entertaining, complex and dark. Sometimes it can be lighthearted but it is mainly dark. Because when you trade your flesh for power, what is left of YOU?

Mario F. Triola is a Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Dutchess Community College, where he has taught statistics for over 30 years. Marty is the author of Essentials of Statistics, Elementary Statistics Using Excel, Elementary Statistics Using the Graphing Calculator, and he is a co-author of Biostatistics for the Biological and Health Sciences, Statistical Reasoning for Everyday Life and Business Statistics. He has written several manuals and workbooks for technology supporting statistics education. Outside of the classroom, Marty has been a speaker at many conferences and colleges. His consulting work includes the design of casino slot machines and fishing rods, and he has worked with attorneys in determining probabilities in paternity lawsuits, identifying salary inequities based on gender, analyzing disputed election results, analyzing medical data, and analyzing medical school surveys. Marty has testified as an expert witness in New York State Supreme Court. The Text and Academic Authors Association has awarded Mario F. the wording used in the math questions could have been expressed a little better but they are understandable

I used this statistics workbook for a general statistics class at my local community college a while back. The material inside didn't exactly go along well with the accompanying book we had to purchase for the class. As others have said, the wording used in the math questions could have been expressed a little better but they are understandable. If you can I would recommend getting the updated edition of this book. From what I read the questions seemed to be stated more clearly. Overall the workbook is fine as long as you match it with the proper textbook it is designed for, which is elementary statistics 10th edition. Mine came fast and was packed in good condition as well. Thanks.

Awful Textbook

This was one of the worst math books I have ever had. I have taken stat in high school, undergrad, and now graduate level. This book had me so frustrated and confused, ESPECIALLY as an online student having to basically teach myself. There was just too much stuff within the pages and it was extremely hard to find examples of the problems I was doing in MyStatLab in this book. I found myself constantly flipping pages back and forth. I'm glad I still managed to pass the class.

Awesome!

This is the book the professors don't tell you about or at least at my CC they don't. My professor required a graphing calculator but we never graphed one thing. We only used the calculator to work through the long formulas. With this book, I was able to use the calculator and solve problems the way statistics was intended. It helped me tremendously! It took some of the pressure off on tests. It allowed me to check my work by doing things the long way and short way. Tragically, I didn't discover this book in the beginning of the semester. It was only when I knew I needed help that I sought out the internet for more and different ways to approach concepts. I ended up withdrawing from the class on the last possible day to do so because I'd done poorly before I discovered this book and it was too late to recover. I look forward to retaking a statistics class next semester with this book as a very useful guide.

Software Defined Network, or SDN, as a concept, is quite new in the networking world (at least for me). What it essentially means is that through SDN, management and control of a network is decoupled from a strict hardware architecture and handed over to a software application.

This new eBook, from author Vivek Tiwari, is a technical overview of SDN, its meaning, concepts, working principle and, finally, a glimpse of its future.

In a broad sense, this book is a brief glimpse of the author's journey to becoming familiarised with SDN, its impact and its future.

As well as imparting knowledge, it helps us avoid hours of online searches by providing a consolidated approach towards concepts and technology, and a thorough understanding of SDN via hands on experience through labs.

I had initial doubts about reading an eBook. I am old school when it comes to books. I need the reassuring feel of the weight in my hands, the uninhibited freedom of moving through the pages, but since I have read a few titles by the same author, I thought I should give this eBook a chance.

The book consists of two parts, Part 1 deals with the theory and concepts, Part 2 deals with the hands on experience of SDN.

Part 1

Lets start with what we encounter in part 1.

The obvious approach of core concept explanation precedes critical analysis of this new trend. We come across the history lesson followed by a quick overview of the most important terms that are essential to grasp the concepts of SDN.

Readers should not be dissuaded by the number of chapters (23 in total), as I observed later that every chapter included is essential.

Chapters 1 to 4 set the foundation of SDN and then open up the discussion for Openflow. As explained by the author, Openflow is the protocol that intertwines with the architecture which is SDN.

Chapters 6 and 7 go though the concepts of Openflow and demonstrate its capabilities. This is followed by a brief synopsis of the different versions of this new protocol.

Once Openflow has been dealt with, the author starts making a case for SDN by extolling its advantages. Even though the chapter on this topic is quite small, each point discussed under this banner is quite concise and relevant. Individually each reason stated makes its own case depending on the nature of SDN deployment.

There are several scenarios explained in subsequent chapters where SDN can be deployed. These include infrastructures like enterprise networks, service provider, wan and datacentres.

What follows the case studies is quite interesting. By now the reader must be intrigued thinking of the future of all network hardware providers, once the network itself can be virtualised. The author provides the involvement of salient players in the network hardware market, e.g. Cisco, juniper etc. This discussion also includes key network users like Google and Facebook, users for whom the network is regarded as the main computing platform.

The author then opens up the field for a very candid and interesting topic. This is where he weighs out the feasibility of SDN itself, while performing a critical analysis. He tries to prove or disprove whether it is hype or the imminent future.

The future is then discussed in chapter 16. This is of course the author's predictions. However, after reading it, I felt more in agreement with it than against it. I have a strong feeling that the author has made a valid point. The outcome of SDN and the future of network are intertwined and fundamentally inseparable.

Part 2

The second part, as mentioned earlier, is all about the hands on experience of SDN. The author lists the requirements before the SDN theory can be put to action. All of this is discussed in chapter 17. Then from chapter 18 to chapter 23 we not only get a ringside view of SDN in action, but also indulge in being part of the excitement of practising SDN as well.

As is customary the concluding section of the book contains appendices, providing more support information about SDN, related softwares, projects etc., which only enhance the understanding of SDN.

After reading the book and being enlightened about SDN, I must say I am more than intrigued about this new concept. I will be watching the progress of it very closely and, who knows, I might end up jumping onto the SDN bandwagon very soon. It would be a folly not to do so. I presume key stakeholders in network based institutions and vendors are already getting involved to a great depth.

Summary

This book certainly succeeds in arousing a great amount of interest in not just SDN but how this is probably going the shape the future of the network as a whole. I would recommend this book to all CTO and CEOs who are looking to move with the times and embrace technology. SDN is here to stay, and this book is a very good platform to start getting acclimatised with it. The book is a good initiation of SDN, which might, or should I say will definitely, end up being a game changer in our future.

W. Lawrence Neuman James is professor of sociology and Asian Studies coordinator at University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. His M.A. and Ph.D. were earned at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.� He has authored seven books and published 35 articles and book chapters, which have appeared in Social Problems, Sociological Inquiry, Social Science Quarterly, American Sociological Review, Critical Asian Studies, Teaching Sociology, The Journal of Contemporary Asia,� Sociological Quarterly, and other journals . He is a former president of the Wisconsin Sociological Association. Neuman has received his university’s highest award for research, the Chancellor's Award for service to students with disabilities, as well as the the Wisconsin Sociological Association's Outstanding Service Award, and the College of Letters and Sciences awards for outstanding teaching, excellence in research, and outstanding service.

I needed Basics of Social Research for my Sociology class. The book has a lot of useful information in it. I am learning how to write Social research papers using the Scientific Method. I would recommend this text book to anyone who does a lot of Social Research.

Not a Fan So Far

I am not a fan of this book so far. Granted I have not read it cover to cover yet. But I have had to read quite a few chapters throughout the book (and still have more). The first thing I noticed was that it is very amateurish. Yes, I understand it is the BASICS of social research, but it is entirely too basic. The author spends too much time defining terms that I learned in 3rd grade and had drilled into my head ever since. I (and I wold expect other college and graduate students) do not need to have "hypothesis" and "theory" defined for me once again with long explanations as to what these terms mean. Maybe I am not the best person to review it. I am on my second masters degree (this is for my graduate level research methods class) and I have had two research methods classes already (one in undergrad and one in my last grad program). Despite that, I think that it would be amateurish and not much help for any college or graduate student, but especially graduate students. Maybe if someone was in a lower level research methods class it would be of help. If I later decide I am wrong, and find something helpful in here, I will update this review.

some gaps

The CD-Rom sounded like a good idea, but it wasn't that useful, and it had some bugs. You can't just fill in the blanks. The text in the book was rather difficult to understand at times, and there are some gaps. I'd look at Shannon Pratt's book and also "Unlocking the Value of Your Business".

Best Business Valuation Book I Found Among Many

This is the only book I found that provides a quantitative method for determining how much to pay for a business and the factors that move that amount up or down. I use a number of the questions from the valuation questionnaire in the book, together with some of my own, to guide my first conversation with the owner of a business I am thinking about purchasing. This has so impressed several business brokers they they have asked for a copy of my list of questions. As with any book, it could have more information. I found that, although the CD is a great resource, it lacked industry information for several businesses I have evaluated as potential acquisitions.
