Practical Guide to Appreciating Others

This book is a quick read that explains how different people like to receive appreciation in different ways. For you hard-nosed numbers-crunchers out there, the authors do a good job making a business case for showing appreciation at work. The book is a good balance between head and heart. You need to show appreciation only when you really mean it, but you also need to intentionally focus your behavior toward others in a way that will make them feel appreciated. [And the type of appreciation you like may be very different from what your coworker likes.]

The book comes with a link and password to a web-based survey to help you identify your own languages, so you can share with others what sort of appreciation is most meaningful to you. But the most valuable use for the survey will be in giving it to others, so you can find out how to most effectively show appreciate toward them.

I work in corporate training and development, and there is no shortage of assessments that people use for trying to understand others. Each of these has its own strengths, but most of them require a fairly intense amount of study and practice to be of practical value. The value in the 5 Languages approach is that it is intuitive, easy to remember, and easy to act upon.

Appreciation versus performance reviews

Really enjoyed the book. I came from a large retailer where our focus was on performance reviews and everyone turned it on at the mid-year point and at the end of the year. What was missing was appreciation and encouragement and that's where this book spoke to me. It's amazing what can happen to people when you offer them a little appreciation especially in their own language.
I'm familiar with the original book but didn't really see the connection to the corporate world until I read this book. There are some great examples and action items on what you can do for each language.
Our approach was to do the "blanket" approach and assume that everyone would "love" the gift or the annual luncheon. It was interesting - there were some people who would give away their gift or not show up for the lunch, and later you would hear them complain about these approaches. This book made me think - what would happen to our company if we learned to appreciate people in the language that speaks to them most.

Must read for employers

The latest in Gary Chapman's best selling series about how to best express love to individuals in one's life, The 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace changes gears a bit and helps one show appreciation in a setting where the word love may be misinterpreted or not be appropriate.

For this edition, Chapman paired with workplace psychologist Dr. Paul White to discuss ways appreciation can be shown in the workplace, as well as the effect appropriately directed and received encouragement has on workers individually and the workplace as a whole. Chapman and White discuss the various ways appreciation is shown and the importance of encouraging someone in a way that is meaningful to him/her. The five love languages are quality time, acts of service, words of affirmation, tangible gifts, and physical touch. Within these five languages, there are various dialects, or specific ways that are more meaningful depending on the person. For example, one worker may feel the most appreciated when receiving a private not of encouragement, while another may be more encouraged by a public word of affirmation.

Chapman and White are thorough in their treatment of each language of appreciation and how it can be expressed in the workplace.They give many helpful examples from the variety of field tests they've done with numerous companies throughout the nation, of varying sizes, services offered, and structures. The end of each chapter includes several questions under "Making it Personal" that help the reader apply the contents of each chapter to his/her life. There is also an "Appreciation Toolkit" in the back with helpful appendices on topics such as "How to Reward Volunteers" and "Acknowledging and Dealing with the 'Weirdness Factor'".

Overall I would strongly encourage any person in leadership over others in the workplace to read this book. The effects of positive and appropriate affirmation in the workplace cannot be overemphasized. Anyone from the CEO to the low man on the totem pole who simply wants to encourage those around him will benefit from reading Chapman and White's The 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace.

I had bought my BRILLIANT RED ATLAS 150 WELLLNESS PASTA MACHINE, without knowing how to make a variety of the Worlds Perfect Pasta Doughs.. I am astounded at the varierty of dough recipes, and the multiple step by step (breath by breath) photos helping you, hand by hand, thru the process...& giving you full page/plate photos of the finished products..You can almost see the heat rising from the plate, smell the aromas.. I cannot wait to use this book. At the time I ordered this book, I bought the LAST ONE Amazon had.

Best Cookbook for Beginner's

This book has everything a beginner could want, easy, clear instructions, lot's have how-to illustrations and a very nice selection of recipes. It covers everything pasta. I bought it used, the best $14 I have spent in years. I spent 4 yrs in Italy and traveled extensively throughout the country, still, there are sauces I never even heard of or tried. There are so many pasta and sauce recipes, I can't wait to try or that I now know how to make.I really look forward to the weekends because it's the only time I really have to try everything. Even though my kitchen is a messy disaster area by Sunday evening, I am having fun!

About the Author
Thomas E. Van Hyning, fluent in Spanish and a research manager for the Mississippi Tourism Division, served 1991-1995 as U.S. correspondent for the Puerto Rico Professional Baseball Hall of Fame and was a former member of SABR's Latin American Committee. He writes for The National Pastime and the Baseball Research Journal. He also wrote Puerto Rico's Winter League (1995; paperback 2004). He lives in Florence, Mississippi.

A great lessons for MLB GM

Great memories and a lot of statistical facts. For many decades, the Puerto Rico winter league , was a cheap way, to watch playing almost mayor league baseball caliber. I remember the disbelief face of a tourist seen for $ 5 bucks, playing in the same team , Roberto Alomar, Carlos Baerga, Carmelo Martinez, Ruben Sierra, Edgar Martinez, Carlos Delgado,Rey Sanchez,Juan Gonzalez, Ricky Bones,, etc, vs Bernie Williams etc. These days, after 20 years of been in the same draft as all the mainland players,few puertorican players are shinning in MLB. Also a new vision in the general managers that prohibits the few stars to play winter ball ,has diminish the quality of players. But a new crop of stars are brewing . Players like Carlos Correa, Francisco Lindor, Jose Baez are near stardom in MLB in one or two seasons. In those days, players that play year around baseball, didn't suffer lesion as often that these generation. Hopefully a new commitment will rise by MLB , an allow the best new stars refine the skills in Puerto Rico Winter Baseball. All general managers should read these books, and learn the secret of their predecessors .
