About the Author
A distinguished professor of economics at Pepperdine University's Seaver College, Robert Sexton is a graduate of California Lutheran College and received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Colorado. Dr. Sexton writes frequently for economic and business journals and is the author of nine books on economics, including his newly released EXPLORING ECONOMICS and Survey of ECON published by South-Western/Cengage Learning. His research spans American economic history, economic policy analysis, statutes and enforcement costs, public choice, regional economics, migration, and economic education. Professor Sexton has been a visiting professor at UCLA and was Pepperdine's 1991 Professor of the Year. His professional achievements have been recognized with the Howard A. White Memorial Teaching Award, the Luckman Distinguished Teaching Fellowship, and multiple Merit Acceleration Awards for excellence in teaching and research.

Creative yet simple!!

This is the baking book I have been waiting for! I own so many vegan books, and I am an avid baker, and this book has great potential to be my new favorite ! I have already bookmarked half the book for 'to try recipes'!! Even my non-vegan friend read through my copy and was oohing and ahhing at every recipe

This has a fantastic variety of recipes: muffins, cookies, bars, cakes, pastries, yeasted breads etc. It even has a section for easy bake ovens for kids!! Too cool. Although I don't own an easy bake oven, I want one now just to try these super cute recipes

To me, this book is a perfect balance of creativity and simplicity. Meaning the recipes are simple to prepare, ingredients are not too wacky at all, yet the recipes are still exciting and they have cute perky names! :D Flavor combinations are definitely interesting

I have already tried 3 recipes after getting the book yesterday! Everything turned out great!

Most recipes are based on soy yogurt (at least the cakey/quick bread recipes).

I really like this book and I plan to try almost everything!! I can't wait!

Only critique is that some pictures here and there would be nice!

Vegan Baking Made Easy & Delicious

I've been a big fan of Kris' ever since she released her fantastic book, Damn Tasty Vegan, so it's a pleasure to see her back with even more delicious treats in this fun book!
There is a strong dislike among part of the vegan community for baked goods that use egg replacer powder instead of, well, eggs, so you'll be happy to see that Kris uses none of the stuff in here.
If I had to pick one favorite from this book, I'd have to go for the Nuts For Carob Bars. Now I know what some of you might be thinking, carob = yuck, but wait: this is actually the recipe that turned my strong dislike for the so-not-chocolatey powder into pure and utter love.
Parents of little ones (or people who appreciate smaller treats) will adore the section in which bite-sized recipes with tiny yields are offered. With choices such as Lil' Yellow Cake, Lil' Chocolate Cake, Lil' Peanut butter Drops, and Lil' Thumbprints, turn your kids into bakers-to-be by letting them tap into their creative side while having fun and spending time with you! A brilliant idea I haven't seen in any other vegan cookbook yet.

oh dear god, chocolate chip cookies that actually taste like CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES. it's been so long. i've been trying - and abandoning - vegan baking recipes for three years; they were almost all lousy. now i've had this cookbook for one week and i've already made excellent, carnivore-fooling chocolate chip cookies (twice), sugar cookies, and brownies. my dairy- and egg-allergic 4-year-old is thrilled, and so am i. i also love the info on what happens after the oven, such as how to cool and store. why doesn't every cookbook have this? thank you, thank you, thank you.

About the Author

Dr. Robert T. Grauer, Creator of the Exploring Series

Bob Grauer is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Information Systems at the University of Miami, where he is a multiple winner of the Outstanding Teaching Award in the School of Business, most recently in 2009. He has written numerous COBOL texts and is the vision behind the Exploring Office series, with more than three million books in print. His work has been translated into three foreign languages and is used in all aspects of higher education at both national and international levels. Bob Grauer has consulted for several major corporations including IBM and American Express. He received his Ph.D. in operations research in 1972 from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn.

Dr. Keith Mulbery, Consulting Series Editor and Excel Author

Dr. Keith Mulbery is the Department Chair and an Associate Professor in the Information Systems and

Technology Department at Utah Valley University (UVU), where he teaches computer applications, C#

programming, systems analysis and design, and MIS classes. Keith also served as Interim Associate Dean,

School of Computing, in the College of Technology and Computing at UVU.

�

Keith received the Utah Valley State College Board of Trustees Award of Excellence in 2001, School of

Technology and Computing Scholar Award in 2007, and School of Technology and Computing Teaching

Award in 2008. He has authored more than 15 textbooks, served as Series Editor for the Exploring Office

2007 series, and served as developmental editor on two textbooks.

Keith received his B.S. and M.Ed. in Business Education from Southwestern Oklahoma State University

and earned his Ph.D. in Education with an emphasis in Business Information Systems at Utah State

University. His dissertation topic was computer-assisted instruction using Prentice Hall’s Train and Assess IT program to supplement traditional instruction in basic computer proficiency courses.

Mary Anne Poatsy, Series Editor

Mary Anne is a senior faculty member at Montgomery County Community College, teaching various

computer application and concepts courses in face-to-face and online environments. She holds a B.A.

in psychology and education from Mount Holyoke College and an M.B.A. in finance from Northwestern

University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management.

Mary Anne has more than 12 years of educational experience. She is currently adjunct faculty at

Gwynedd-Mercy College and Montgomery County Community College. She has also taught at Bucks

County Community College and Muhlenberg College, as well as conducted professional training. Before

teaching, she was vice president at Shearson Lehman in the Municipal Bond Investment Banking

Department.

Dr. Lynn Hogan, Office Fundamentals and File Management and

Windows 7 Author

Lynn Hogan has taught in the Computer Information Systems area at Calhoun Community College for

29 years. She is the author of Practical Computing and has contributed chapters for several computer

applications textbooks. Primarily teaching in the areas of computer literacy and computer applications,

she was named Calhoun’s outstanding instructor in 2006. She received an M.B.A. from the University of

North Alabama and a Ph.D. from the University of Alabama. Lynn resides in Alabama with her husband

and two daughters.

Seems Unfinished / Rushed in Editing

This book teaches you a lot about Excel but it seems like either the author didn't finish writing the book or maybe it's just poorly written. Some things still seem to be in a pre-finished format with unclear directions on some assignments. 2nd edition really needs to fix that.

I had to purchase this book for a college class. It has been very easy to use and helpful for learning spreadsheets in Excel. I like the layout, writing and the hands on experience it provides. Great way to improve your office skills at home!

Dede Korkut: Oral Traditions in Turkic Epics

The Book Dede Korkut is a compilation of tales about the Turkic peoples of Central Asia, who later went on to conquer Asia Minor, and much of Europe. Although these stories are purportedly about an group of Muslim raiders, and defenders of the faith, it is clear that these references are grafted onto an earlier tradition. The stories themselves are juicy, and often funny, and give a good sense of life on the steppe. The translation is excellent, with good endnotes.

Heroic tales of steppe conquest and more. Love, hate, jealousy, campaigns, descriptions...The sort of tales one might imagine in dreams, but with a closer to reality focus than many epics. However, the music and internal rhythms of the Turkish original are lost in the translations.

Lewis does a wonderful job of explaining most of the spectacular nomadic quirks and cultural idioms that make this book so emblematic of the Oghuz world in the Middle Ages. A truly epic book, and one that I revisit often.

As someone who has devoted my life to the study of Turkic cultures, I absolutely recommend this book. Especially if you take the time to find the original texts online (free .pdfs in and antiquated Azeri dialect abound)--it's very fun to read along in both languages, either to check his translation or to practice your language skills.

About the Author

Matthew Strickland is Professor of Medieval History at the University of Glasgow.

Robert Hardy is famous for appearing in All Creatures Great and Small and the Harry Potter films. Away from acting, he is an acknowledged expert on archery; he is a Trustee of the Royal Armouries at HM Tower of London and of the Mary Rose Trust, and the author of Longbow.

Excellent Military History

Impressively researched and intelligent. Includes superior analytical narratives of many of the battles of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries; analysis of wounds and medical care; a good discussion of the armor penetrating capacity of longbow arrows; etc. Thoroughly documented for scholars, but accessible to the general reader. I am a specialist in this era of military history, and can highly recommend this book.

The Best I've Found!

I've read a lot of books about the longbow in the course of research for a historical fiction series, The Strongbow Saga, that I'm the author of. This is without question the best book on the subject I've found. Although expensive, it's incredibly thorough and comprehensive. Skip the others and buy this one--it covers every aspect of the subject, over a wide historical period.

Worth Every Penny

This is one of the definitive resources on the medieval archer. It covers the use of crossbows and longbows from the time of The Battle of Hastings through the Wars of the Roses. Another crucial text on the subject is Jim Bradbury's The Medieval Archer (1996).

The Great Warbow is an oversize book packed with color illustrations. It is comprehensive from the standpoint that it gives detailed descriptions of how the two types of bows were used in battles over more than 500 years.

So much has been written on the longbow in the Hundred Years War that the book doesn't really break a lot of new ground on that matter. But it would be hard to do so.

The material on bows used in the Battle of Hastings is excellent. So is the material on Richard the Lionheart's use of crossbows in the Crusades. The book's coverage on the use of bows in the continual fighting between the English and the Scottish is outstanding.

The authors also tackle the difficult subject of trying to relate how the longbow was used by Yorkists and Lancastrians in the Wars of the Roses where, in most actions, both sides use of bows cancelled each other out; that is, there was no clear advantage to one side or the other. The exception to this is the Battle of Towton on March 29, 1461. They also cover the significant bow action the day before in the Battle of Ferrybridge.

With nearly 100 pages of explanatory notes to lock down their facts and assertions, it is a major scholarly work. If you are interested in how these bows were used in battles of the late Middle Ages and about the warriors that used them, this is a must-have book.
