With the possible exceptions of Dr. Alain Locke and W.E.B. Du Bois, no African American excelled on as many different levels as James Weldon Johnson. Along This Way--the first autobiography by a person of color to be reviewed in The New York Times--not only chronicles his life as an educator, lawyer, diplomat, newspaper editor, lyricist, poet, essayist, and political activist but also outlines the trials and triumphs of African Americans from post-Reconstruction to the rise and fall of the Harlem Renaissance. Born in Florida in 1871 to middle-class West Indian parents, Johnson recognized the challenges and absurdities of segregated America early on. But it was his experience as a tutor to rural blacks while a student at Atlanta University that was to alter the course of his life: "It was this period that marked the beginning of psychological change from boyhood to manhood," he writes. "It was this period that marked also the beginning of my knowledge of my own people as a race."

With a rare blend of pride and humility, Johnson recounts how he, among other accomplishments, became Florida's first black lawyer in 1898, a diplomat in Venezuela and Nicaragua, and lyricist for his brother Rosamond Johnson's famous song, "Lift Every Voice and Sing." Johnson's commentary on his epochal novel, The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man, as well as writings on his works of poetry--The Creation, God's Trombones, and Fifty Years and Other Poems--is priceless. Equally important are the logical and even-tempered opinions on race that he wrote for The New York Age, which offered comprehensive critiques of Du Bois, Booker T. Washington, and Marcus Garvey, along with his analysis of the racial climate while serving as head of the NAACP. Johnson's theme of moral cowardice sets his tragic story of a mulatto in the United States above other sentimental narratives. The unnamed narrator, the offspring of a black mother and white father, tells of his coming-of-age at the beginning of the 20th century. Light-skinned enough to pass for white but emotionally tied to his mother's heritage, he ends up a failure in his own eyes after he chooses to follow the easier path while witnessing a white mob set fire to a black man. An Honest Portrait

This book is so interesting because it is written by a child produced from a white aristocratic man who either forced himself on, or had relations with a black woman. At first, the man seems somewhat caring. However, as time goes by and the black mother dies, the gentleman no longer has interest in his son. This son looks white, so should've pass as black or white? Being black is harder, but what is the "right" thing to do?

A great read. Thought it was going to be by a South African colored person and wasn't going to be bothered reading it! I was pleasantly surprised. The author has great insight into the subject of race, cities, countries and most importantly into people as individuals. I'm very curious to know how his adorable wife died,!!

Heather McCollum is an award winning, historical and contemporary YA paranormal romance writer. She earned her B.A. in Biology from the University of Maine, much to her English professor's dismay. I had read about The Dragonfly Chronicles, it had intrigued me but I always had something else to read first. Astonishingly enough, when I saw Prophecy available on Netgalley, I did not put it all together.. And when I did I was so excited, as Prophecy is Book One in the Dragonfly Chronicles!

Heather McCollum offers us an amazing story about well, life! Good vs Evil, defining yourself, accepting fate, NOT accepting fate, Fighting Evil, Standing up for what you believe in, Love, Family, politics.. I said it was about life!

Serena Faw was literally dropped into this world. Making a splash so it were! As a child of nine, Serena was blessed to have been found and loved by a Rom Tribe in England. Raised as one of them but always apart. Her gifts kept her separate.. and even love had escaped her because she always knew what the other was plotting. When Serena bumped into a void.. she was astounded to realize that it was a man she couldn't read. A blessing. Yet when the attraction between them begins to sizzle, Serena has moments when she wishes she was sure he wanted her for herself.

Keenan Maclean was raised to die. Literally. A family prophecy said one son would die defending.. something and the other would marry a witch and bring the clan to peace. Since Keenan was the second son, his father declared that he was the one to die.. and he was raised accordingly. Always an afterthought.. Rarely loved or cosseted. But he grew up strong and true! Always putting the family first. Until he saw Serena dance and knew she was his.. something special that had been missing in his life.

When Serena's brother was accused of murdering a member of the king's court, Keenan promised to help her prove his innocence. A bargain was made and the promise kept. These two would work together to find the true murders. As they traveled together, Keenan began to realize that Serena was the "witch" of the prophecy. That she could never be his.. his entire clan depended on her to marry his brother. Serena on the other hand was falling for the brother right in front of her!

The emotions this book brought out were simply wonderful. You wanted to hate Lachlan (the older brother), you wanted to smack the members of the clan Maclean around for trying to push the wrong brother at Serena. You even want to smack Keenan around for being willing to sacrifice love! But.. Ms McCollum does a wonderful job of pulling us back in and finding forgiveness. Another wonderful book that teaches us that fate is always trumped by free will!!

Add to the prophecy, there is Serena's own destiny that needs to be discovered.. Oh and of course the entire thing is set in the days before the battle at Culloden.. So add intrigue and history as well!! This book could have been overwhelming but instead Ms McCollum made each subplot dance within to her tune and created a carefully orchestrated wonder!

Great for fans of paranormal and historical romance

I owe an enormous apology to both Heather McCollum and to readers. I was asked to review this book over a year ago and I am just now posting the review. There are a lot of reasons, or excuses depending on your view, but I will just say that I am incredibly sorry to have not put this out in a timely manner.

Prophecy is the first book in the Dragonfly Chronicles about four sisters sent from their era to other places throughout time in order to thwart evil and save the world. Serena, who is the protagonist sister for Prophecy, is dropped into a Romany tribe in Britain in the mid 1700s where she is raised as part of the family but she knows she is different and has “gifts” that others don’t have. Serena is both a telepath and can see the future.

Serena finds herself falling for Keenan Maclean, who is immune to her telepathy. Keenan is equally drawn to Serena but his sense of duty and honor continually get in his way and therefore in hers. Keenan and his brother, Lachlan, are thought to be the brothers mentioned in a clan prophecy and were raised to put the clan and their destiny ahead of happiness.

Prophecy is fairly complex in terms of plot - there is time travel, powers, prophecies, wrongful murder accusations, scheming clansmen, and the overarching good versus evil, save the world plot line that ties all four books together. It kept me turning the pages to see what would happen even when I was annoyed by some of the characters actions in regards to being together.

Generally, I think that anyone who enjoys a good Highland hero, paranormal and historical romance will probably enjoy this book a great deal. I certainly enjoyed it enough to buy the next book in the series, Magick.

OMG AMAZING

This Series captivated me from the beginning. I stumbled upon it completely by mistake when I accidentally hit free sample on my Kindle. Maybe I was meant to find it because after reading the first few free chapters I had to read the whole book. The combined elements of magic, history, and romance makes for an enchanting read. Heather has created an amazing story that feels so real. I fell in love with these characters from the start. Kennan and Serena have a blazing chemistry that dang near had my Kindle smoking. Each time they come close to acting on their passion something stops them, making for some delicious anticipation. Kennan's unwavering duty to his clan, while admirable, made me want to jump in the story and beat some sense into his stubborn hide. My heart aches for Serena as she struggles to understand why the man she loves is holding back. The book comes to a battle filled conclusion at Culloden which added even more reality to the story. I loved the backdrop of Scottish history and the fiery passion between the characters. The story flows well and the use of Scottish dialects make it come alive. I do hope my question of what the demons that threaten Serena and her sisters actually are is answered in the following books. I give "Prophecy" an amazing 5/5, it quickly became a book I will read over and over. If you liked the Outlander Series you might enjoy The Dragonfly Chronicles.

TED C. LEWELLEN is Professor of Anthropology and former Chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Richmond, Virginia. He is the author of numerous books, including the Choice Outstanding Academic Book, Dependency and Development: An Introduction to the Third World (Bergin & Garvey, 1995). He is currently working on a third edition of Political Anthropology (Bergin & Garvey).

Good, but requires student pre-existing knowledge

I purchased this book to use for a lower level undergraduate course on Globalization and Culture. I thought it would make a good text around which to structure other readings on globalization pertaining to specific indigenous cultures of North and South America. While the chapter headings appear to fit, the level of theoretical knowledge required for the average undergraduate student to use such a text fits for those who have already had a course in theory (leading to a firm foundational understanding of gender and development, identity, and postmodern theory). A lesson learned for adopting a text "sight unseen" (other than an Amazon.com 'Look Inside' preview). As such, this text is more suited to majors in their final semester and graduate level. Bodley's 'Anthropology and Contemporary Human Problems' is probably a more apt fit for undergraduates.

straightforward and in centered on current issues

I'm not sure why anyone would rate this book poorly, or say that it is too complicated a read. I am an anthropologist who has read many texts on globalization and this book is as straightforward and contemporaneous as it gets. Lewellen has created a great synthesis of the field of global research with historical foundations that are clear. If you want to get grounded in the subject of globalization, and the problems and issues that researchers face, start here. Yes, it is not a fun read, but the field is in need of a text like this to be able to explain in undergraduate terminolgy, the intricacies of global economic processes.

A Must Read for all Students of the Epistle to the Hebrews

With book like Christology, Hermeneutics, and Hebrews, it is difficult for me to write a true review of the book; I would be stuck writing thirteen separate reviews for each of the chapters in the book. So instead I offer an apology for why you should read this book. If time permits, I will post a thought or two in the future on certain chapters of the book

The subtitle of the book--Profiles from the History of Interpretation--informs you from the start the direction of the book. The authors trace the history of the christological interpretation of Hebrews through some of the earliest Greek commentators like Chrysostom and Cyril of Alexandria, the medieval works of Aquinas, the Reformers Calvin and Luther, and finishing in the modern period with three essays on modern interpretation of christological interpretation from a two biblical scholars and theologian. The essays highlight an aspect of a famous interpreter from the past and how they understood the christology of Hebrews in their days.

For a student of Hebrews, this book is a must read! Each of the essays offers the reader a robust history in christology and a better reading of some of the key texts in Hebrews. One final note. The essays by Attridge and Hagner are incredible! Both of these seasoned Hebrews scholars have much to offer. I found that reading these two essays first helped guide my reading of the remaining essays. In all I would recommend Christology, Hermeneutics, and Hebrews to every serious student of Hebrews as well as the reader who wants to gain a better understanding of the history of interpretation and how is develops through time.
